Budding playwrights in Hull are being invited to apply for this year’s Middle Child Writers’ Group, which returns in October.

The free introduction to playwriting course includes a series of five weekly workshops, designed to help people find their voice and start writing their first ever script.

The group is led by Tom Wells, a Hull-based playwright, whose work has been performed on stages across the country.

Tom said: “We are so, so excited to bring our Writers’ Group back, after postponing it last year due to the pandemic. It’s always a delight to meet new writers and help them bring their ideas to life.

“You don’t need to have written anything before to apply. You just need to have a few good stories to tell – funny stories, sad stories, tough stories, tender stories – stories we’re eager to see on Hull stages.

“Whether you’re burning to put something on stage, or just curious to see whether you can write a play, we’d love to hear from you.”

This is the third year that the Writers’ Group has taken place and participants from previous years have since gone on to professional commissions, including with Middle Child.

Jay Mitra took part in 2019. Last month they contributed to Middle Child’s cabaret, we used to be closer than this, which was performed at Absolutely Cultured’s Creative Hull festival.

Jay said: “Middle Child have had a monumental impact on my career and helped shape me into the confident writer that I am today.”

Hannah Scorer also joined the group in 2019 and, last year, co-wrote the company’s animated pantomime, Pattie Breadcake: Into the Pantoverse.

Hannah said: “A single parent in my 30s, I really thought I’d missed any kind of boat with writing and I wasn’t sure I had any ideas – or knew how to write them if I did.

“It’s not an overstatement to say the entire experience, from the first group session to now, has been transformative for me.”

Applications are now open and close on Wednesday 15 September.
