Work to install a new pedestrian crossing in Southcoates Lane will begin next week.

Once completed, the new crossing will increase safety measures for pedestrians using this busy road.

For cyclists heading east out of the city, a route will be installed on the pavement so that a lane for right-turning traffic into Southcoates Lane only, can be maintained.

Councillor Dean Kirk, portfolio holder for transportation, roads, highways and flood prevention, said: “By installing this crossing we are improving safety measures for the hundreds of people who walk this route on a daily basis.

“There is currently no safe crossing route for pedestrians at this key junction, so we hope that this targeted intervention will help to support some of our most vulnerable road users and improve overall road safety.”

The improvements will begin on Monday 6 September and are expected to last around five weeks. Temporary traffic lights will be in place for the duration of the works.

Councillor Kirk said: “We understand that the works may cause some delays to traffic, so we encourage motorists to allow extra time for their journeys or consider using an alternative mode of transport.”

The work forms part of the ongoing programme to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists across key roads in the city.
