This month sees Hessle Whiting Mill’s first ever participation in Heritage Open Days.

The Mill will be open to visitors on Sundays 12 and 19 September from 10am-4pm.

There will be an opportunity to come down to the mill on Hessle Foreshore and explore over 200 years of history inside this unique industrial mill that was designed to crush chalk from the nearby quarry, which now forms the Humber Bridge Country Park.

The theme of this year’s Heritage Open Days festival is ‘Edible England’ and aims to explore the past, present, and future of our culinary heritage and culture.

Dr Alex Ombler, heritage officer, said :  “When you come down to the mill, you can learn about the curious link between chalk whiting and bread, and you can also find out what quarrymen ate to keep their strength up for work.

“Along with our team of volunteers, I will be on site to welcome you and answer any questions you may have. There will also be activity sheets and colouring-in handouts for the children to take away.”
