North Bridge & George Street Have Now Reopened in Hull

George Street, including North Bridge, has reopened to motorists following a two week closure for critical gas infrastructure repair works.

The route was closed so that Northern Gas Networks (NGN) could repair a 36 metre long gas main across George Street.

During the closure, Hull City Council also carried out essential works to North Bridge and improvements to traffic signals in Witham. These concurrent works mean that at least ten days of additional traffic disruption has been avoided.

Work to significantly improve traffic signals at the junction of Clarence Street and Great Union Street also took place this week. The work formed part of a Highways England funded grant to improve the surrounding road network of the A63.

North Bridge has now reopened

Andy Burton, assistant director for Streetscene at Hull City Council, said: “We are pleased that these crucial works have now been completed and the road has been fully reopened, just in time for the bank holiday weekend.

“The work that is currently taking place on the city’s roads is essential and we try to ensure that we minimise disruption as much as possible. In this instance, we paused works in Woodhall Street, which is part of the Stoneferry Corridor scheme, so that the works to North Bridge could be completed.

“We understand the frustrations about the impact these works are having and apologise for the inconvenience they are causing. Whilst we appreciate it is very difficult, motorists are asked to stagger journey times if they can, allow more time for travel across the city and bear with us as these essential works take place to ensure public safety and improve Hull’s roads in the long-term.”
