The Top 8 Events Happening Online this Week

There is only a short time left until we are able to meet up for events in person in Hull. For the mean time, there is still lots of online events to keep us entertained at home.

Get Drawing: Cats Workshop

Wednesday 7 April, 3 PM – 4 PM

This drawing class from Richfield Arts will help you relax and destress through a series of creative activities from the artist Pui Lee. Pui Lee is a British-born Hakka Chinese artist and art educator who leads creative workshops like this one regularly. This workshop is recommended for young adults and adults, although you don’t need any artistic experience, and at the end of the session you will hopefully be able to draw a picture of a cat!

Grimm & Co- Digital Storytelling

Thursday 8 April, 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM

If you know a 7-11 year old with a big imagination and a love of telling stories, then this session will be a perfect way for them to work on their creativity to guide their story telling skill. This event hosted by Hull Libraries is from Grimm & Co, a literary charity based in Rotherham that aims to bring out the writer in every child. If your child wants to get their story published, they can send it to the Grimm & Co website.

Laugh Out Loud: Online

Thursday 8 April, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Laugh Out Loud is a live comedy event you can watch from home. It is presented by Mencap Gig Buddies, which runs two sites in Bradford, Hull and the East Riding. It is a volunteer befriending scheme to allow adults over 18 with learning disabilities to have fun and make friends in an informal support system, which creates new social circles that is particularly important for vulnerable adults in these isolating times.

Lost Voice Guy from Britain’s Got Talent

The first comedian is best known for winning Britain’s Got Talent in 2018. Lost Voice Guy’s fantastic humour also won him the BBC New Radio Comedy Award in 2014 and he regularly appears on TV on shows such as The One Show, Last Leg and This Morning.

Next is Georgie Morrell, who is a regular UK stand up comedian. Her own brand of comedy mixes gossipy humour and disabled banter that creates a unique act.

Matt Hoss has been a stand up comedian since he was 19 years old, and he now hosts seven successful podcasts and also won the 2015 Eric Baker Award.

Luke Poulton is an autistic comedian, who is well-versed in online comedy through his huge presence on YouTube platform and his TikTok channel, which has over 1 million views.

Caleb Femi

Thursday 8 April, 7:30 PM (available up until 30 April)

If you loved the Hull Literature Festival then you are going to want to check out this event by Manchester Literature Festival. Caleb Femi is a rising British poet who was Young Poet Laureate for London 2016-2018 and is best known for his debut poetry collection, Poor. For this Festival, Caleb Femi will be performing his new poetry created for this event for the first time. Then he will talk about his work with the host, Vanessa Kissule who is also a poet.

Locked Up Festival 2

Thursday 8 April , 2:30 PM – Saturday 10 April, 11 PM

This festival will be streamed live for two days, and follows the first one which raised £14,000 for charity! There will be lots of panels, such as ‘The Best Book Event of My Life’, ‘Campfire Stories’ and ‘Writers at Home’, that will be interesting and entertaining. The festival will feature almost 50 of the world’s best crime writers.

This festival is presented by Two Crime Writers and a Microphone which, as the name suggests, is a podcast hosted by two crime writers, Steve Cavanagh and Luca Veste. It has over 100 episodes and has become one of the most popular lit podcasts.

All profits from this festival will be given to The Trussell Trust, which supports about two thirds of the food banks in the UK and have been invaluable at giving nutritional meals to those in need during this pandemic.

Creative Workshops: What do you put in your mouth?

Thursday 8 April, 5:30 PM and Saturday 10 April, 10:30 AM

This is a great opportunity for those who are aged 14-24 and interested in artistic design, sustainability, but also the Hull community. Hull Food Partnership will be delivering these workshops that will allow you to gain experience from working with a local artist in order to create a campaign to impact food policy and sustainability in Hull.

Friday 9 April, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM

If you have been missing theatre productions, then this short play should be for you. Inside/Outside uses a Zoom call (which is far too familiar to modern viewers) in order to satirise self help guides and shed light on something we’ve all felt recently: loneliness. This play is by Bread Bin Theatre Company, which produces new writing from emerging artists and creatives. Inside/Outside is the company’s online theatrical debut and it is written by James Pickthall and performed by Alanna D Merriman.

Band of Burns- Spring Live Stream

Sunday 11 April, 7:30 PM – 11 PM

The Band of Burns is a unique group of twelve folk and world music artists who come together to celebrate the life and work of the ‘Scottish Bard’, Robert Burns. The philosophies of the poet, equality and social justice are very much deeply rooted in the musicians’ beliefs and very important in the world we’re living in. This event will be to celebrate both the arrival of spring but also Burns Night 2021.
