Project providing free period products launches in Hull

A project providing collection and donation points for period products has launched. Period Dignity Hull is a group of individuals and organisations in Hull, including the council. They have worked together to set up the service in as many places as possible throughout the city.

The group wants Hull to be a period-friendly city, where everyone can access the period products they need, and periods can be openly talked about, without stigma.

Anyone who needs period products can collect them for free from any of the locations listed below. People who want to contribute products can also drop them off. All products are welcome, including pads, tampons, cups, period pants and anything else. Products just need to be unopened, and in their original packaging.

Cllr Hester Bridges, Deputy Leader of Hull City Council and Chair of Hull Health and Wellbeing Board said “We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the many organisations in the city who have come forward offering to host a donation and collection bin.  We are so grateful that they are keen to work with us to ensure that everyone who needs period products can easily access them”.

Elle Douglas, from the Warren youth project, said: “We have always given out free period products at The Warren to those who need them. The past 18 months has led us to understand the demand is greater, as soon as we were introduced to the Period Dignity Hull campaign we knew we had to get involved to help end stigma and to allow people of Hull greater access to products”.

Stacey McEvoy, of Purple House women’s centre, said: “At Purple House we have worked with women and girls whose periods are used as a tool in their abuse.  Most significantly in the denial of access to products.  Creating a safe space and opportunity where they can access them without shame or backlash is absolutely vital”.

Andie Cropper, of Andie’s Period Poverty Support, said: “The current pandemic, with its knock on effects of furlough, contracts being cut and redundancies has shown how anyone, regardless of their ‘normal’ circumstances can be adversely affected.  Andie’s Period Poverty Support is proud to be aligned with Period Dignity Hull”.

Anyone who would like to provide a designated donation or collection point can contact Period Dignity Hull at: perioddignityhull@gmail.com
