Backfire Promotions Race the Waves is a unique event within the UK motoring calendar and is returning to the East Riding and will be held from Thursday 16 June to Sunday 19 June 2022.

The main event: ‘A Theatre of Automotion’ will take place on Bridlington South Beach on Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 June where American and vintage style hot-rod vehicles and motorcycles will Race the Waves along the South beach in pairs from a flagged start.

A number of stalls (food/beverage/merchandise) will be situated on the promenade near the Yorkshire Water Pumping Station (below South Marine Dr).

This is a FREE family event to watch and enjoy!

Running alongside the event is the Steampunk Emporium inside The Royal Hall within Bridlington Spa from Saturday 18th June until Sunday 19th June. There will be static displays of vintage and classic motorcycles and scooters, exhibitors of steampunk, retro, vintage, goth and automotive memorabilia. There will also be live entertainment, a tearoom and bar.

To compliment the weekend event, the Race the Waves organisers have added the following to their event’s programme:

Thursday 16 June

Cruise from The Yorkshire Museum of Farming near York, through the Great Wold-Valley to the Bridlington Old Town.  In conjunction with Regeneration of Bridlington Old Town (ROBOT) a vehicle procession will proceed through the Old Town for a photography promotion. There is a suspension of parking and a road closure on the High Street (1300 – 15.00).

Friday 17 June

Church Green Old Town Bridlington will be used for vehicle scrutineering/registration during the day with a Sunset cruise moving from Church Green Old Town Bridlington to the North Bay around 19.00. The lower promenade below The Expanse Hotel will be used for a static vehicle display from 19.00 – 21.00.

2018 saw the first ‘Race the Waves’ event which proved very successful and 2019 saw a full weekend of events. The event was postponed in both 2020 and 2021 due to COVID.

Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for economic investment, growth and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The previous Race the Waves events proved to be very popular following the very first event in 2018 and it has been such a shame to have to postpone this event in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. I’m delighted it is back for 2022 and would recommend residents in Bridlington and visitors to the area to get involved. The event is completely free and well worth coming down to experience some vintage motor exhibitions.”

Race the Waves is a joint event between East Riding of Yorkshire Council (Visit East Yorkshire Events Team) & Backfire Promotions.
