Review: Awe-inspiring feats as the Passagers took to Hull New Theatre’s stage

I was excited to be at Hull New Theatre for a one night showing of Passagers by The 7 Fingers presented by Dance Consortium. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I just love being in that building. The anticipation, and watching the audience come in.

Passagers according to the programme is the art of circus; “An ode to train travel. To recurring departures, anticipatory reunions, fateful encounters in transit. A community of strangers with one thing in common: they all have somewhere to go. They are joined in suspended limbo between two lives, as they leave one to prepare for another”.

The curtain rose to our players on stage humming – It got stranger. They started to move as if on a train and we set off on our journey. This was when things livened up.

The company all danced together but tapered into individual performances, initially one girl and hula hoops, she was truly amazing. She hoola’d round her legs, her feet, her arms, sometimes all at once with several hoops. She moved around the stage with such style, with the hoops barely missing a spin. The audience were very impressed by her skills and erupted as she finished.

We were then travelling along a crescendo of amazing ‘dancers/acrobats’ using various props around the stage, some disguised as luggage racks became train windows with a contortion style performer moving stealthily around and in between them.

On came a young woman with a backpack and out of the backpack came aerial silks. This was quickly set up and she amazed us all with her aerial skills on the silks – which never ceases to amaze me. It looked so graceful with the artist working various shapes and the lines of the silks flowing to the floor.

Next came a large hoop suspended above the stage. Another young woman went through her routine which moved up and down the stage showing us fantastic shapes in and around her hoop.  The skill set and training was fascinating to see.

We were treated to a duo on one trapeze. The trapeze didn’t swing as we are used to seeing in a big top circus. The two artists went through a routine on the trapeze and it was fascinating to see a female take the traditional role of ‘catcher’ of the performer.

The guys in the company came into the picture when the girls were performing this and suddenly were catching the girl and throwing her back up to the catcher. This had the audience gasping in admiration. They gasped even more when one of the guys slid from the top of a pole (which was the height of the stage) and stopping suddenly less than six inches from the stage. In fact, a lot of us screamed and then burst into appreciative applause.

We were amazed at the strength of the guys who climbed a double stack of supports as he swung his smaller male partner, just like a swing between the two platforms. He threw him into somersault and somersaults with twists which had us gasping.

If we gave stars out at Hull What’s On then I would give this a stonking 5 stars. It was an awe inspiring, jaw dropping, amazing spectacle of breath taking talent all very slickly rehearsed. What’s amazing too is that this is a travelling show and they were only in Hull one night.

They had to set up this equipment safely and quickly, often setting it up during the show – they were awesome! My daughter and I both agreed that we would love to see this show again.

The audience gave a standing ovation at the end which was well deserved. If this show comes back again, don’t miss it.
