Many of you may know the name Amy Johnson, however many of you may not know her full story. Luckily, we are privileged enough to be the home of this amazing woman, as such, we have a unique look on her life.
Thanks to this, you can now go see her life put into a play. Lone Flyer – The Last Flight of Amy Johnson is now playing at Hull Truck Theatre and you too can sit and be entranced by this amazing show and experience the struggles and obstacles that she faced. Â
After personally seeing this amazing show last night, I can confidentially say that you too will enjoy this no matter your age.
The set-up of the story is one I have personally never seen before which caught me off guard and I found myself stuck in a quicksand of awe – from there I couldn’t look away.
Lone Flyer, written by Ade Morris and directed by Lucy Betts, combines the beauty of how Amy’s life looked from the outside with the sadness and struggles she went through in her life, with an amazing retelling of her life story; told through fantastic performances from Louise Willoughby and Benedict Salter, as well as atmospheric lighting and sound design.
The story shows how Amy was able to become Britain’s most influential female aviators after countless knockbacks and perfectly captures the feeling of being helpless, hopeful yet totally and completely unknowing.
Amy’s struggles presented in Lone Flyer are ones many young women can relate to – even in today’s modern age. The themes surrounding Amy’s fight to figure out what to do for a career can be admired by all and produces a heartening message for those who are finding their way in life.
Hull Truck and The Watermill have been able to capture the light in the life of Amy, but also the darkness that came with her fame and encapsulate why she is such an inspiration to Hull and women across the country.
I left Hull Truck Theatre with a burning feeling in my soul that I could achieve anything I set my mind to – which, in essence, is the spirit of Amy Johnson. It is a feeling you welcome and never want to let go.
Lone Flyer – The Last Flight of Amy Johnson is currently playing at Hull Truck Theatre until Saturday 30th October.
