See what’s on at Hull Truck Theatre this September

Hull Truck Theatre has a stellar line up of live events programmed to engage audiences this September! Offering a variety of family theatre, comedy, drama music and screenings, there is something for everyone – including a revamped John Godber production of his classic comedy-drama, Perfect Pitch.

Continuing their long-standing collaboration with Hull’s award-winning international arts festival, Freedom Festival, as it returns to the city this August and September, Hull Truck Theatre are delighted to support Freedom Festival inpresenting two cultural experiences for children aged 0-2 and their families. Firstly, Engruna Theatre will present Univers (Wednesday 28 – Friday 30 August), a poetic sensory experience based on visual imagery and live music. Meanwhile, La Petita Malumaluga present Bob Marley for Babies (Saturday 31 August – Sunday 1 September), an arrangement of the greatest hits by Bob Marley, performed by four singing dancers and a cellist. Both shows will create an inviting atmosphere that will allow children and babies to immerse themselves in the theatrical experience of theatre, art and play.

For those looking for a final hoorah before the kids go back to school, look no further. If you enjoy music, dance and puppetry thenAnna Hibiscus’ Song (Tuesday 3 September) will be a mesmerizing treat for those aged 3+ and their families. Presented by Utopia Theatre to tell the story of a young girl named Anna Hibiscus, who is so filled with happiness that she feels like she might float away, the more she talks to her family about it, the more her happiness grows! There’s only one thing to do…sing!  This theatrical adaptation of Atinuke’s much loved children’s book will leave audiences beaming from ear to ear.

For fans of tribute style acts, then Tubeway Days: The Gary Numan Live Experience (Friday 6 September)will take you on a journey back in time with early era classic songs from 1979/80. And Bye Bye Baby (Friday 27 September) promises to be a night to remember, celebrating the timeless, iconic music of ‘Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons’.

What happens when American supernatural TV series, Buffy The Vampire Slayer meets Edinburgh Fringe parody? Buffy Revamped (Tuesday 3 September) has been lovingly created by comedian Brendan Murphy, presenting a funny, satirical one man show, bursting with 90s pop culture references. This fast-paced gem brings you the entire 144 episodes of the hit 90s TV show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as told through the eyes of the one person who knows it inside out… Spike. 

Hull Truck Theatre will present plenty of comedy in September with a variety of stand-up comedy acts. Lloyd Griffith (Friday 6 September) returns to Hull with his brand-new show Baroque and Roll. Drag Race UK Winner Danny Beard (Friday 13 September) with their full band and snappy comedy will perform Straight Expectations. British Comedian of the Year Winner Jeff Innocent (Thursday 19 September) will deliver a master class in stand-up with Smart Casual. And Amy Gledhill (Friday 20 September) returns to her hometown with a show about self-confidence, romance and bin bags in Make Me Look Fit On The Poster.

The ever-popular John Godber returns to Hull Truck Theatre for Autumn season, reigniting his classic comedy-drama Perfect Pitch (Tuesday 17 – Saturday 21 September). Described as “A triumph” by The Sunday Times, this state of the nation comedy drama is by turns hilarious and unsettling. With a Yorkshire cast and set on an eroding coastline, audiences will enter the world of caravanning and Karaoke. Tickets also available as part of Hull Truck Theatre’s Drama Deal.

From comedy drama to dark comedyKin (Wednesday 25 September) is a new piece of theatre by Christine Mackie telling the story of sisters-in-law Kay and Steph, who having never been close, must now prepare for revelations that lie ahead after the funeral of the most important man in both their lives.

Facing The Waves (Friday 27 – Saturday 28 September) is a new musical from award-winning company Dogwood Productions. With astory that stretches across the centuries, this is a tale about a family steeped in tradition of a life at sea, juggling family, career and crewing the lifeboat. Will it be going off to sea or chips for tea? In preparing the show, Dogwood, working with the BBC, conducted numerous interviews with communities along our north-eastern coast, capturing the memories, experiences and expectations of those living by the sea to create an authentic tale.

Running in partnership once again with Hull Independent Cinema, Hull Truck Screen will present Crossing (Wednesday 4 September), a heartfelt portrayal of overcoming the degrees of separation that divide us, and Orlando, My Political Biography (Saturday 7 September), is a bold and joyous celebration of trans identity, told through the lens of Virginia Woolf’s iconic novel.

Meanwhile, Royal Ballet and Opera present The Marriage of Figaro (Live Screening) (Tuesday 10 September). Get ready to watch unfold a series of mistaken identities and misunderstandings, with all members of the household participating as each tries to get what – and who – they want.

First Thursday Theatre Club (Thursday 5 September), led by Associate Director – Tom Saunders, returns with a practical exploration in which participants will experiment with a range of approaches to stylised theatre and share their work at the end.
