Hull City Council welcomes today’s news that Siemens Gamesa is to double the size of its factory in Hull, bringing 200 jobs and further supply chain work.

Siemens Gamesa is the world’s leader in the offshore wind industry, and is to invest £186 million to upgrade and expand its offshore wind turbine blade factory in Hull.

This morning the UK Government announced that Siemens Gamesa will receive grant funding from the Government’s £160 million Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Support scheme to develop manufacturing facilities in the Humber region, supplying essential components to offshore wind farms across the UK – as well as for export around the world.

Hull City Council Leader, Councillor Daren Hale said: “Absolutely fantastic news from Siemens Gamesa!

“This additional £186m investment will create hundreds more jobs, and the expansion will support the recovery of the city post-Covid.

“Hull is at the forefront of the green economy revolution.”

200 additional direct jobs will be added to the approximately 1,000 person-workforce already on site at Alexandra Dock. Planning permission is already in place, and construction is due to begin within weeks, with construction expected to complete in 2023.

Councillor Hale continued: “We have worked closely with Siemens Gamesa over several years, in the planning stages of the offshore wind turbine blade factory, ahead of its opening in Hull in 2016.

“The council is committed to a zero carbon future and, by working with our private sector partners, this investment is a major milestone in that journey.”

Clark MacFarlane, UK Managing Director, Siemens Gamesa, said: “Our investment in our existing offshore blade factory, logistics, and harbour facilities in Hull has been a key driver of the growth of the UK’s world-leading offshore wind industry. We are proud to commit our long-term future in Hull and the Humber, providing safe, clean-energy workplaces which also contribute to the decarbonisation of the UK’s energy supply. As we work towards unlocking the potential of wind power, we applaud the UK Government’s strong and consistent support for offshore wind.”
