An apple tree, in a Hull park, is set to become a focal point for future generations of panto lovers in the city.
The tree, now a permanent fixture in Kingston Square Park opposite Hull New Theatre, was planted by the cast of this year’s pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as a beacon of hope in the wake of the Covid pandemic and a reminder of the city’s long-standing commitment to deliver world-class entertainment.
Hoping the fruits of her labour will create a lasting legacy are former Coronation Street actress Faye Brookes said: “It was so lovely to plant the tree signifying the future of theatre and something that is so beautiful and full of hope. I feel so honoured to be involved in the planting, which now means I will always have a special connection to Hull New Theatre.”
Best known for her role as Kate Connor in ITV1’s Coronation Street, Faye will play the title role of Snow White in Hull New Theatre’s glittering festive production. Having trained in musical theatre, Faye starred as Frenchie in Grease, Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical in the West End and as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde The Musical on tour across the UK. She will also visit Hull in November, ahead of her festive season in the city when she takes on the role of Roxie Hart in Chicago.
She said: “I am also so thrilled to see live theatre back, and even more thrilled that panto is returning. I can’t wait to see the Hull audiences.”
Joining Faye for the ever popular traditional event with its magical mix of comedy, boos and hisses will be Fat Friend’s actor and funnyman Neil Hurst, as Muddles, who returns for a second season following his much-loved Hull panto debut in Aladdin.
Neil said: “I am so excited to be back in Hull and can’t wait to see everybody smiling again. I think we all need a right good laugh, especially after the past few years.”
Completing the line-up will be Dame extraordinaire, the fabulous Nigel Ellacott, starring as The Nurse. No stranger to panto Nigel will be bringing his array of fabulous frocks, quick wit and encyclopaedic knowledge of pantomime, marking his 46th year in panto. Nigel has a long affiliation with Hull New Theatre and last appeared as Dame alongside Sherrie Hewson in Christmas 2014.
Nigel said: “It is such a joy to be back here in Hull. I first played here 32 years ago, this is such a beautiful building and one which should be regarded with civic pride.”
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs play at Hull New Theatre from Saturday 11 December 2021 to Sunday 2 January 2022 with tickets from £16.50.
