July will see exciting wildlife outdoor events at local nature reserves in the East Riding, allowing people to learn more about the natural world whilst enjoying some adventure.

The first event, on the evening of Friday, 15 July, is Night-Time Flyers, taking place at Millington Wood (YO42 1TZ). Participants can gather around the moth lights which will be set up for one night and be amazed by how beautiful moths are.

In addition, watch pipistrelle bats hunting over the clearing and walk along the woodland listening to their echolocation calls on bat detectors. There will be the chance to learn to identify species with members of Butterfly Conservation and the East Yorkshire Bat Group.

This free event takes place from 9.30-11pm, with the walk length up to one mile (walking along the main woodland ride).

A Bird Watching for Beginners! event takes place on Saturday, 23 July at Humber Bridge Country Park (HU13 OHB) from 10am-12.30pm.

Participants can find out where to see birds, how to identify them and pick up a few tips on using binoculars (please bring your own if you have them), with all levels of knowledge and ability welcome.

This event will be led by Margaret Boyd, bird watching guide from Yorkshire Coast Nature.

Councillor Mike Medini, portfolio holder for cultural and leisure assets at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “These two events, led by experts in their fields, will really be exciting and educational for those in attendance.

“Not only will participants be able to take in the wonders of nature, but they will also be able to get their walking shoes on and their bat detectors or binoculars at the ready!”

More information and booking for both events can be found at www.eastridingcoastandcountryside.co.uk/whats-on

For any queries on both these events, please contact East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s countryside access team at countryside.access@eastriding.gov.uk or on (01482) 395320.
