What’s on in Hull & East Yorkshire this week | 10 – 16 May 2023

It’s getting warm out, eh? Even though it’s starting to feel like Summer, we are still in May, and there are plenty of events you don’t want to miss!

Music, theatre, comedy and days out – we’ve got all that and more, so read on!

Jesus, Jane, Mother and Me

Wednesday 10 May @ Hull Truck Theatre

Meet Daniel Valentine. He’s a strange boy. It’s Mother’s Day and he has returned to his family home to celebrate. He’s here to tell you his story. A story of a domineering mother, church trips, youth club discos and a transformative trip to the theatre to see a certain Yorkshire songstress that ultimately changes everything…

But do all stories have a happy ending?

Jesus, Jane, Mother & Me is a twisted coming-of-age story blending pitch-black humour and heartache by award-winning playwright Philip Stokes (Heroin(e) for Breakfast) that explores family dynamics, who our idols are and just how hard life can be when you’re a little bit different.

Tapped

Saturday 13 May @ Hull Truck Theatre

Gavi wants to inspire his community. Which is tricky when everyone would prefer to just stay at home and watch Bake Off.

Adamant to succeed, he starts hosting motivational meetings from his garage for his fellow Co-op colleagues. With daily mantras, goal setting and Spandau Ballet, he believes he can change their lives. However, when the only two attendees are bickering mother and daughter Dawn and Jen, it’s not quite the enlightening experience they all thought it would be. Dawn wants more from life, Jen wants a brand new life and Gavi just wants Jen in his life; but there’s only so much ‘positive visualisation’ they can all do before simply facing up to the painful reality.

Tapped is a witty and sensitive portrayal of managing mental health within a family, highlighting the barriers we put up, whilst having those all-important lightbulb moments, like realising Aldi really does sell everything.
