The lockdown is here, and the news is scary. Don’t worry, with these open world videogames you can escape the lockdown. Explore the world and try new things. Here are the very best open world games for you enjoy during lockdown.

Red Dead Redemption

A gritty open-world adventure. Red Dead Redemption is a massive sandbox game, set near the Mexican border. It’s a truly immersive game that transports you to the wild west. The main quest takes approximately 20 hours to complete, but the game itself can last as long as 50 hours. This gives you more than enough time to explore, complete quests, tame horses, and collect bounties. You get to play as John Marston, a former outlaw, who is taken from his family by Bureau of Investigation agents. To gain his freedom, he must bring his former gang members to justice. The combat is fun and fluid. You can take cover, free aim, blind fire, and target particular body parts. It’s a great game with a vast environment to explore, and its story will keep you hooked through the lockdown and beyond.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn is a third-person action role-playing game. You get to play as Aloy, who was cast out of her tribe at birth and raised by an outcast. Aloy has a wide range of abilities including using tripwires, a spear, a bow, crafting, dodging and more. The gameplay is diverse and combines role-playing with tactics in a lush environment.

Horizon Zero Dawn has a fascinating story. It is set in the 31st century, and the world is occupied by large robotic creatures called machines. The remaining humans live in tribal populations and have limited access to technology. An event called the “Derangement” has caused the machines to attack humans. Larger and more dangerous machines have also started to appear. The plot seems simple enough, but this is a story unlike any other. To put it simply, Horizon Zero Dawn is a fascinating and fun game you’ll want to unravel again and again.

Dark Souls

Dark Souls Remastered (Developed by QLOC & Virtuos)

Let’s be honest, Dark Souls is not for everyone. It’s difficult and it might not feel like an open-world game, but it is. One of the interesting things about Dark Souls is its minimalist approach to storytelling. Historical events are often implicit and left to the player’s interpretation, and most of the story is given by non-player characters, item text and world design. This adds an air of mystery to the dark and unforgiving environment.

Like most RPG games, Dark Souls allows you to customise your character. You can choose their gender, appearance, name and starting class. Killing enemies gives you souls which you can use to level up and buy items. Finding new bonfires and killing bosses allow you to progress through the game. The game is infamously tough but that’s what makes it both scary and rewarding. Ultimately, Dark Souls is an unusual game that combines darkness, mystery and dread.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

No open world list is complete without Skyrim. You’ve probably played it to death already. That said if it’s been a while it might be the perfect time to go back. You play as the Dragonborn and are on a quest to defeat Aldruin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. To play the game, you complete quests and level up your character and equipment. In true open-world tradition, you can focus on side quests and ignore the main quest indefinitely.

What makes Skyrim truly special is the scale and customizability of the game. The game is practically endless. Despite this, it still has great graphics. Travelling through Skyrim is a breathtaking experience. You’ll traverse snowy mountains, dense woodlands and majestic cities. Not only that, but you’ll meet a range of interesting characters too. Exploring Skyrim is a treat and it’s worth getting back into it during the lockdown.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a fan favourite action RPG. You play as a monster hunter called Geralt of Rivia who is looking for his missing adopted daughter. The Witcher 3 is like most RPGs. You can fight enemies, interact with non-player characters, complete quests and acquire experience and gold which can be used to increase Geralt’s skills and equipment. The game has several endings depending on the player’s choices during the game.

Witcher 3 is a complex game that was written to be realistic and morally ambiguous. It’s full of quests and details that you will want to explore. Playing the game transports you to a world that feels authentic and unique. If you’re stuck indoors and want to get out, then this is the game for you.

Fallout 4

Fallout 4 (Bethesda Game Studios)

Fallout 4 may be old, but it’s just as spectacular as ever. This action role-playing game doesn’t age. You play as a survivor who emerges from cryogenic stasis in an underground vault. After waking up, you witness the murder of your spouse and the kidnap of your child. In an effort to find them, you must explore a distinctive post-apocalyptic world.

Fallout 4 makes the standard open-world RPG formula feel fresh. Every location and every detail is a story in itself. A 1700s ship is a potential rocket filled with friendly robots and a time capsule is a graveyard. It’s time to put on your vault jumpsuit and explore a tantalising retro-futuristic world full of radiation, robots and death. It might not be cheerful but it’s probably more interesting than your living room.

Escape The Lockdown

If you’re tired of the lockdown, there is a way out. You can leave this world for a digital one. Go outside, fight dragons, change the world and explore a new horizon. These open-world games can make a world of difference during the lockdown. Take control and try something new today.
