Christmas 2020 is just around the corner and even though it’s not going to be the full-fat experience like previous years due to the coronavirus pandemic, there’s still some traditions that still need to be upheld.
Yes my tradition is a massive takeaway on Christmas Eve with the whole family. And even though I won’t be eating with my family this year, you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll still be ordering a fantastic, local takeaway to kick off the festive season.
In this article I will list Hull’s best takeaways based on user reviews on Tripadvisor, alongside my own experience and local knowledge.
Where are the best takeaways in Hull this Christmas?
Pizza could be considered the king of takeaway food and in Hull we have a whole load of great restaurants offering Italian-quality pizzas.
La Pizzeria & Grill
Priory Road, West Hull
La Pizzeria & Grill on Priory Road comes highly recommended and as the name suggests, they’ve got pizzas on deck. With one reviewer commenting ‘Simply the best Pizza I’ve found in Hull’ you can see how they landed the second position on Tripadvisors list.
722 Holderness Road, East Hull
Hot Pizza on Holderness Road has been a big recommendation coming from our readers recently. As you can see from the photos, the food does look really good and especially cheesy bites pizza!
56 Holderness Road, Hull, HU91ED
Nineteen91 is a farely new addition to the food offering in Hull. It featured in our takeaway recommendations back in November and serves up some of the best artisan pizzas and calzones with a special section on the menu called ‘The Freaky Ones’ which have some unusual delights including ‘The Valhalla’ which is half pizza and half calzone.
Personally, nothing beats a Chinese takeaway and that’s mostly due to variety. Hull has a plethora of different Chinese restaurants that all have a unique (and quire a large) menu so there’s always something different to try.
Charles St, Hull city centre

Tripadvisor marks Charles Street’s Yinjibar as Hull’s best Chinese restaurant with a 4.5 star rating based on 361 reviews. One reviewer called the food ‘really delicious’ and specifically recommended the dim sum.
Call 01482 376435
Mayflower Chinese came highly recommended by our readers recently. According to our readers, they never disappoint which is exactly what you want from your usual Chinese takeaway. Mayflower is your classic Chinese takeaway with a menu full to the brim with fantastic oriental food.
New Bridge Road

Another Chinese Food delight based in Eat Hull is Bamboo Gardens on New Bridge Road which has also been a Reader Recommended takeaway recently.
An Indian takeaway is quite possibly the nation’s favourite takeaway and judging by the amount of reviews, it is definitely Hull’s favourite cuisine.
Anlaby Road, West Hull

With an unbelievable 5 star rating based on 937 reviews, The Madras Restaurant takes the crown at the top of Tripadvisor’s list. One reviewer claimed that they were ‘shocked by the quality of the meal’ and said they had ‘the best curry ever’.
Holderness Road, East Hull
In second place is Holderness Road’s Maharajah. One reviewer called the restaurant ‘excellent’ and claiming that it’s ‘easy to order online’. Another reviewer mentions that it is also perfect for vegans and vegetarians, claiming that ‘everyone was catered for very well’.
Raj Pavilion takes the third place with a 4.5 star rating based on 808 reviews. One customer called this Beverley Road restaurant a ‘little diamond’ and notes that ‘you can tell the food is made fresh, made by hand and incredibly tasty’.
Fish and Chips
Fish and chips is an absolute staple when it comes to a British winter. So Christmas is the perfect time to tuck in and enjoy the great chippies we have around Hull & East Yorkshire.
Kingswood, Bilton, Willerby, Bridlington
Order Online >
PAPAs have made quite a storm in the past few years giving away 1p fish and chips on launch days. Well they have over 4 branches open across East Yorkshire right now (their Hull city centre branch is currently closed). Not only are the chips, fish, patties and more all cooked to perfection, but it’s the modern conveniences they offer which make buying fish and chips very easy too.
Drive-thru is available at Kingswood and will be in Bilton soon. But they offer click & serve at Kingswood, Bilton and Willerby branches too, where you just order online, park up and they’ll bring it to your car. They also offer the world’s largest battered pig in blanket, and seaside doughnuts! Yum!
Newland Ave, Hull Avenues

This is a great local chippy but the fish here is what makes it great! They’re also the only fish & chip shop in the local area to offer a full vegan range. Plus Newland Fisheries is really good value and likely the cheapest option on this list so if you’re on a tighter budget this Christmas, this is the chippy for you.
Burger and fries are a takeaway staple and boy does this Beverley based Burger joint got ’em! They claim that ‘burgers are their passion’ and their menu confirms that with 8 different burgers (which sport some very interesting names).
They’ve also got some skin-on and sweet potato fries for the side; or some dirty fries if you’re up to the challenge. The burger joint also has some pretty commendable vegan options too which is always nice to see. Plus they’ve got a decent alcohol list (for a delivery) which is perfect since you don’t have to drive home!
Hull Marina & Beverley

Fresh to Hull but already an award winning bar & grill in Manchester, Solita’s menu is packed with creative and decadent burger creations, wings, starters and so much more. Solita captures flavours and styles of New York and Italy in a unique way and brings them to your doorstep. Their wagyu beef burger list is massive and their vegan selections is fair so they’re onto a winner in my books.
Crafted are Dave’s absolute favourite right now! According to him, the meat is the best he’s tasted and loves the loaded fries and mac and cheese. They have a large menu with fried chicken, hot dogs, and wings. For me, their ‘plant & veggie’ menu is also pretty impressive. Good beer fans will be excited to hear they can also grab an ATOM beer with their order as well. Plus don’t forget their cocktail list… maybe not for Christmas Eve.
Ok so we featured Nineteen91 under Pizza, but they also have what looks to be an incredible burger range too with some interesting creations so we had to give them another mention. They serve triple stacked burgers and even a waffle steak burger. The reviewers do highly recommend them too!
Vegan and Vegetarian
Tripadvisor makes it pretty difficult to find solely vegan/vegetarian restaurants, making it hard to find great tasting, cruelty-free meals. Luckily, I’ve got the local knowledge to pass on these fantastic, plant-based recommendations that Tripadvisor cannot.
Doner Summer is the current flavour of the Hull vegans. The restaurant opened briefly before the national lockdown and was met with a massive queue. Now they’ve launched on Deliveroo and was met with an even longer virtual queue. I’ve had a couple of meals from there now and I can confirm that their food is excellent. So good, in fact, that the vegan chicken makes me suspicious.
31 Percy St, Hull city centre

To appreciate Doner Summer, you have to try Huckleberry’s as well. As for the longest time, Huckleberry’s was one of the only places worth going to to get fantastic tasting vegan chicken in Hull. And whilst the vegan competition is pretty hot in Hull right now, Huckleberry’s is still a great option for a vegan takeaway. With a whole range of American inspired dishes including Hot Dog, Southern Fried Chicken, and Pulled-Not-Pork-Burger, Huckleberry’s will definitely fill you up this Christmas.
When it comes to ordering a takeaway, Thai Cuisine is often underrated. However in Hull, we’ve got some top quality Thai restaurants supplying fantastic takeaway food.
Princes Avenue, Hull
Order from JustEat >
Number one on Tripadvisor’s list is Thai House Restaurant with a 4.5 star rating based on 433 reviews. One reviewer complimented this eatery for its ‘amazing food and very good service’ and also mentioned that its ‘not badly priced either’. You can find Thai House on Princess Avenue.
George St, Hull city centre
Order on JustEat >
The number two spot belongs to Tanyalak. With a selection of green and red curries, soups, and stir-fry dishes, it’s easy to see why Tanyalak is both a Hull and WhatsOnHub favourite. One reviewer claims that the Pad Thai was ‘one of the best [they’ve] ever had’.
Malai Thai Street Food
Newland Ave, Hull
Facebook page >
Newland Avenue’s Malai Thai Street Food takes Tripadvisor’s third spot with a perfect 5 star rating based on 21 reviews. One reviewer mentions how the staff are ‘very clued up on allergies and are able to cater for their complicated allergy profile’.
Sumo Pan Asian
Hessle & Beverley
Order Online >
Ok so Sumo isn’t strictly Thai, but they have a huge range of incredible oriental inspired dishes which includes Thai. Not tried myself yet, but Dave raves about this place.
Some people may not associate an Italian meal with a takeaway. But this is the 21st century and we can get whatever damn cuisine we want delivered to our door. You hear me?
Piccolo Italian Bistro
Chanterlands Ave, Hull
Order Online >
Piccolo Italian Bistro claims the Tripadvisor crown for Italian food with a perfect 5 star rating based on 245 reviews. The eatery serves up some fantastic Italian cuisine with some French influence. ‘I am so grateful to have found Piccolo’ one reviewer claims. They also mention that the ‘food was delicious [and] freshly cooked’.
Uno’s Trattoria & Pizzeria
Newland Ave, Hull
Uno’s Trattoria and Pizzeria comes in at second place with a lovely 4.5 star rating based on 425 reviews. This Newland Avenue Italian is highly rated due to ‘really good quality [food] and huge tasty helpings’ according to one reviewer. They note that their takeaway is ‘a true match to their restaurant quality’. So if you want a restaurant quality Italian meal, Uno’s is your place.
Greek & Mediterranean
Greek cuisine is on the rise and shows no intention of stopping. With many establishments across Hull offering the taste of the Mediterranean to the whole city.
The Aegean Greek Taverna
Anlaby Road, Hull
The Aegean unsurprisingly takes the number one spot in Hull with a perfect 5 star rating out of 624 reviews. This Greek paradise came highly recommended from our readers so it truly is a fan favourite. With classics such as Kleftiko, Moussaka, Souvlaki and Kebabs, Aegean Taverna sounds like an absolute Greek dream. There’s also a shed load of meze options too if you just can’t choose a main.
Up next on the list is The Greek Restaurant with a 4.5 star rating based off 331 reviews. I’ve visited The Greek many times throughout my life but most recently, I’ve been taking advantage of their takeout menu. If you want a restaurant-quality Greek meal at home, this is the place for you.
Meze Bar & Grill
Cottingham Road, Hull
Order Online >
Another fantastic place to try is Meze on Cottingham Road where Dave has tried several times now. He says he loves the tapas and the meat kebabs. They’re offering 15% discount right now too by ordering takeaway. Definitely want to look at for Christmas Eve.
