We tried Humber Street’s newest restaurant, and it was absolutely stunning

Hull’s Fruit Market has a brand-new addition, and it’s bringing fresh Oriental flavours to the area.

Chinese Whispers has taken over the former J Johnsons on Humber Street, transforming it into a brightly decorated, vibrant spot serving up small plates and cocktails in a stunning setting. The decor is absolutely stunning, but the food is what truly steals the show.

We started with succulent chicken satay skewers, crispy panko prawns with a delicious signature dipping sauce, and rich, slow-roasted char siu pork belly, which was nothing short of heavenly. But the standout dishes had to be the juicy and tender beef skewers, packed with flavour, and the salt and pepper chicken – crispy, bold, and utterly moreish.

For dessert, we indulged in an Asian pear and apple crumble tart with vanilla bean ice cream, alongside a peanut butter & sesame crème brûlée – both so good we were tempted to order seconds. Drinks-wise, we sampled the Very Cherry and Sex on the Beach cocktails, but there are plenty of mocktail options too if you’re going alcohol-free.

Beyond the food and drink, there’s even more reason to visit. Chinese Whispers hosts live music nights every Wednesday, with more entertainment planned, and their rooftop terrace is set to be a go-to spot when summer rolls around. They also offer box lunches to go, making it a great option for a quick yet delicious meal.

You’ll find Chinese Whispers on Humber Street, where J Johnsons used to be – definitely worth checking out!
