Children from years 5/6 at Westcott Primary School saw their ideas highlighted on the Climate Champions Invention Challenge website as part of Freedom Festival’s ongoing partnership with HCAT schools.
The Climate Champions Invention Challenge is part of the Little Inventors initiative and aims to show that children’s input should be actively sought and listened to on matters that affect their present lives and their future, particularly on the climate and other environmental issues.
Inventions are uploaded the Climate Champions website from children across the globe, and a selection of the most inspiring ideas will be chosen to be brought to life!
These ideas will be showcased at events, including at the UN Human Rights Council, encouraging adults to listen to children and involve them in climate decisions.
Ideas from Westcott featured on the website included:
- Cassidy age 9 who invented The Deep Ocean Robot 1000, a waterproof robot powered by green energy and designed to collect all the plastic from our seas and oceans and recycle it
- Rose age 9 who invented a Hedgehog Saver to protect small animals from predators. It is an extendable device with an umbrella attached and also hangs food and water so that the animals do not go hungry
Mikey Martins, Artistic Director and CEO of Freedom Festival Arts Trust, said: “We are very proud of our ongoing relationship between Freedom Festival and HCAT schools looking at how we respond creatively to issues around the vital subject of climate change.
“With the rise in interest in young people about the effects of climate change, the Waterline Summit being held in Hull and the Cop26 summit happening in the next few weeks, it is timely that these brilliant inventions from the pupils at Westcott School have been featured on the website now.”
