Hull Truck Theatre presents another month of exciting visiting work that will include inspiring plays, entertaining stories, dark, stand up and improvised comedies, as well as magical adventures, in conversations and live screenings. The theatre welcome audiences once more, to come together to celebrate artists old and new to present and enjoy live theatre.

Adam Pownall, Senior Producer at Hull Truck Theatre, said: “This October we welcome a range of unique and varied productions to our venue. There really is something for everyone with new-writing, drama, comedy, screenings, Shakespeare and shows for the whole family across our stages as we continue to celebrate our 50th year.”

October continues the theatre’s journey with Ladies Unleashed (Thursday 29 September – Saturday 22 October) following the popular Hull Truck Theatre hits, Ladies Day and Ladies Down UnderAmanda Whittington continues her story with her third instalment of the Ladies Trilogy. In Ladies Unleashed the group of friends are reunited on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, as they face growing older and the next stage of their lives with typical humour, drama and some ghostly goings on. Join the Ladies for this moving comedy about friendship, growing older and living for today as they celebrate new writing, female voices and continue to champion people from the city of Hull.

Hull Truck Theatre are introducing their first ‘Baby Friendly’ performances for Ladies Unleashed (Friday 7 October 2022, 11am) and Mumsy (Friday 10 & Friday 24 March 2023, 11am), making theatre accessible to new parents and care givers. They hope that parents, carers and families with very young children can still enjoy a trip to the theatre. Please note: Performances are aimed at adults with babies under 18 months.

Dark comedy The MP, Aunty Mandy & Me (Wednesday 5 October) will explore consent and grooming within the gay male community with biting humour and contemporary social commentary about a political sex scandal. Emmerson & Ward Productions and Curve present a bittersweet tale where Dom wants to be an #instagay #influencer, but it’s tough when no one likes your posts.

Rob Ward, Writer and Performer on The MP, Aunty Mandy & Me said: “The MP, Aunty Mandy & Me explores consent, coercion and grooming, but as well as this it asks questions about how the hyper-sexualisation of our community impacts who we are and what we value. I also wanted to explore other aspects of society that fascinate me right now. The political climate in the north of England, the queer experience in provincial towns vs cosmopolitan city life and the relationship between those who have and those who have not.”

Mike Bradwell is very excited to be back in Hull with James Holmes in Tim Fountain’s hysterical and moving Eastendless (Friday 7 – Saturday 8 October).  See Tony Coventry in this hilarious play that looks behind the scenes of Britain’s favourite soap, where the scandalous truth behind EastEnders is revealed! James Holmes is probably best known for his role as Clive in the hit BBC sitcom Miranda. His many other TV appearances include roles in The Catherine Tate Show, Sherlock and My Hero. Expect and evening of laughter and tears and perhaps something a little darker.

Mike Bradwell, Founder of Hull Truck Theatre & Director of Eastendless said: “I am very excited to be bringing Tim Fountain’s play Eastendless direct from the Edinburgh Festival to Hull Truck Theatre as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations and I am particularly proud that Hull audiences will have the opportunity to see’ television’s own’ Tony Coventry spill his soap opera beans on the John Godber stage.”

The performances are dedicated to the memory of Dave Greaves– an original member of the company who moved on to that great 71 Coltman Street in the sky.”

The Godber Theatre Foundation presents Don’t Just Sit There (Monday 10 – Tuesday 11 October), a brand-new show for young people and families about ambition in the arts, finding your passion and being your true self! This is an inspiring play by BAFTA-winning playwright Jane Thornton (co-author of Shakers) and directed by Beth Murrell amplifying that inspiration can come from anywhere. “Quade might want to be Stormzy, but that may have to wait as he puts Kimberley on the path to success!”

Twelfth Night (Tuesday 18 – Wednesday 19 October) is a hugely entertaining story of hoaxes, heartbreak and hidden identities. This production by The Royal Shakespeare Company has been created to give 7–13-year-olds a fantastic first experience of Shakespeare. Using edited versions of the original language, First Encounters brings the plays to life on stage in just 90 minutes.

Hull Truck Theatre’s popular Great Adventures (Saturday 22 and Tuesday 25 October) continues to encourage children aged 3-6 and their families to get creative. The October half term adventure is Princess & The Pea themed and features an arts & crafts session followed by an interactive performance where the children’s craft items come to life as part of the interactive play. The experience offers a wonderful first theatre experience for young children.

Our visiting programme continues throughout October as Larkin Society presents In Conversation with Rosie Millard & Alan Johnson (Thursday 27 October). In this centenary year, the Larkin Society presents a conversation about Larkin the writer, the man and the controversy that sometimes surrounds him.

Join Off The Kerb as they present Suzi Ruffell: Snappy (Thursday 27 October), a brand-new show about settling down (but not settling), becoming a mother (without becoming mumsy). Join Hull Truck Theatre for an evening with Suzi, who has appeared on numerous shows such as Live At The Apollo, The Jonathan Ross Show, QI, The Last Leg, and Womanhood to name but a few.

Red Coat (Thursday 27 October) invites you to meet Lewis. He’s a Redcoat, living the dream and living it large in Bognor Regis. He likes to smile and show you a good time. But what happens when you’re having an ‘off day’? And you tell Barney the dinosaur to p*ss off (in front of a load of kids)? Presented by The Six Twenty, Join Redcoat Lewis for his larger-than-life UK tour!

Notflix (Friday 28 October) brings you back the “Spice Girls of improv” as they return in their five- star, sell-out musical comedy. Inspired by audience suggestions, the all-female cast improvise the musical version of your favourite films, creating movies with 100% more singing, 99% more women and a full live band. Because Everything is better as a musical.

Join Mr Bubbles with his extraordinary soap bubbles in all shapes and sizes! The Bubble Show (Saturday 29 October) is a unique blend of magic, storytelling, and bubble art which sees Guinness World Record holder, The Highland Joker create smoke bubbles, square bubbles, giant bubbles and even fire bubbles in this interactive, fun, international award-winning bubble extravaganza!

Running alongside the Hull Truck Theatre season, the theatre is proud to host screenings and films in Their state-of-the-art screen with sound system.

NT Live: Jack Absolute Flies Again (Thursday 6 October) is a rollicking new comedy by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris (Twelfth Night). After an aerial dog fight, Pilot Officer Jack Absolute flies’ home to win the heart of his old flame, Lydia Languish. Back on British soil, Jack’s advances soon turn to anarchy when the young heiress demands to be loved on her own, very particular, terms.

Silent Cinema (Friday 14 October) present The Mark of Zorro – who he is, nobody knows. Appearing as if from nowhere, clad all in black, sword flashing, he defends the weak and strikes fear into the villainous as he carves his trademark ‘Z’ into the cheek of his opponent. The Hollywood adventure movie began here, with the greatest swashbuckler of them all, Douglas Fairbanks. This will include live, improvised piano accompaniment by Jonny Best, Part of Yorkshire Silent Film Festival.
