What’s on in Hull & East Yorkshire this week | 31 May – 6 Jun 2023

It’s about time to say goodbye to May, and what an event-packed month it was in Hull! Thankfully the traction is only growing, as June is just as packed as the month before.

As always we’ve got another collection of top selections for you, and we’re starting off June strong with the usual theatre, music, art and more!

Quality Street

Wednesday 31 May to Saturday 3 Jun @ Hull Truck Theatre

From the writer of Peter Pan, this delicious farce was such a sensation in its day that it gave its name to the UK’s most loved chocolates! Northern Broadsides revive their hit regency comedy, stirring in a good helping of Yorkshire wit from the retired workers of the Halifax factory where Quality Street have been proudly made since 1936. Think Bridgerton meets Inside the Factory.

Ten years after a tearful goodbye, an old flame of Phoebe Throssel returns from fighting Napoleon. But the look of disappointment on Captain Valentine’s face when he greets an older, less glamorous Phoebe, spurs our determined heroine to action.

She becomes the wild and sparkling Miss Livvy, a younger alter-ego who soon beguiles the clueless Captain. As their romance is rekindled, can she juggle both personas? Or will the deception scandalise the town and wreck any future with the man she loves?

A Tale of Two Cities

Thursday 1 Jun @ East Riding Theatre

For Rugby nerds, Ancestry fans, Local historians – those intrigued by RLs part in the Spanish Civil War and the French Resistance as well as Wembley 1980. Plain and simple – this is a good night out! EVERYONE welcome!

Both Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers started out playing Rugby Union and switched to League in the 1890s. The players worked on the docks and in the fishing community – they couldn’t afford a hobby. Out of this switch, a game emerged that is strong on diversity – no matter colour, creed or class. If you are good enough you can play. Even in a wheelchair these days.

The Derby of words and song features fans Stan (HKR) and Mike (Hull FC) telling of legends and the wider context across Hull and the world. This is banter no-holds-barred. And then, Hull FC legend Sammy Lloyd referees proceedings – with ukulele, whistle and backed by Lloyd Dobbs.

Tutankhamun in Hull: Wonderful things and the 20th-century travels of an ancient king

Saturday 3 Jun @ Ferens Art Gallery

Professor of the History of Visual Culture at Durham University, Christina Riggs, will discuss the century-long history of Tutankhamun’s travels through politics, culture, and commerce.

Christina is the author of eight books, including Treasured: How Tutankhamun Shaped a Century and Ancient Egyptian Magic: A Hands-On Guide. She is an expert on the history of photography, archaeology, and museums.

The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in November 1922 captured the world’s attention – and sparked a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. This little-known king made headlines not for anything he’d done, but because British archaeologist Howard Carter and his employer, the Earl of Carnarvon, used photography and the media to promote their work.
