Yes, the time has come for another round of Christmas light celebrations as the season of festive cheer is almost upon us… is it just me or has this year flown by?!
Now, Hullensians can look forward to a number of great switch-on ceremonies in the coming weeks; happily, these will take place in Hull City Centre; Flemingate; Hessle; Driffield; and Bridlington!
And, at a time when everything’s not so rosy, it’ll be a fantastic opportunity to kick off the Christmas season and look forward to a period of festivities.
Hull City Centre
Thursday 17th November 2022, 5pm
At this moment in time, there is a lack of information regarding entertainment and food vendors for the annual Hull City Centre Christmas lights switch. All we know so far is that it will be in Queen Victoria Square on Thursday 17th November at 5pm.
Judging by past events, you can expect a host of musical entertainment on the City Hall’s balcony, a small light show and perhaps, an address from the Lord Mayor herself. Should be good.
Flemingate, Beverley
Friday 18th November 2022, 5pm
Amazingly, this year, on Friday 18th November, the Flemingate Shopping Centre in Beverley will play host to S Club All-Stars, a spin-off from the 90s group S Club 7; as well as Luke does Buble and Marigold Addam’s Cher tribute act. What’s more, there shall be funfair rides; food stalls; a roaring fire pit; and, of course, a seven-minute fireworks display at 6:45pm. Oh, and Father Christmas will be there of course!
Hessle
Friday 2nd December 2022, 5pm – 9pm
People of Hessle, keep your calendars free on Friday 2nd December because the Town Centre Christmas lights switch is set to take place.
Here, the Town Mayor of Hessle; Councillor Phil Davison; and Father Christmas will come together to lead the celebrations, all of which can be enjoyed alongside staged performances in The Square; food and market stalls; as well as funfair rides!
Driffield
Friday 2nd December 2022, 5pm – 9pm
The Driffield Christmas lights switch-on is also set to take place on Friday 2nd December this year. If you planned on going to Hessle as well you are, sadly, bang out of luck.
Excitingly, Driffield residents can expect a fun-filled night courtesy of the Mayor, who will switch on the lights, and Great Driffield Radio, who are going to provide musical entertainment. Additionally, there will be delicious street food on offer as well as the chance to marvel at some illuminated tractors and/or (why not both?) have your photograph taken with Father Christmas himself!
Sewerby Hall Winter Wonderland, Bridlington
Friday 9th – 23rd December
Admittedly, I can’t find much in the way of a Christmas lights switch on in Bridlington Town Centre this year, but I am under the impression that one did take place last year, so it might well be worth keeping an eye out for any local news items in the immediate future.
However, fret not because the Sewerby Hall Winter Wonderland will be back in full swing! From Friday 9th December to Friday 23rd December, an all-new spectacular display of lights, sounds, and special effects will transform the grounds of Sewerby Hall into a festive paradise and, even better this year, the all-new Woodland Elves are said to be causing mischief. Look closely and you might just snatch a chance to see them!
Cottingham Festival
Sunday 4th December, 10:30am – 4:30pm
We can’t find any official word on their Christmas lights yet, but in recent years, Cottingham has been setting up all their lights (which have been provided by volunteers) in preparation for them being on throughout November to January.
It doesn’t look like there will an official switch on ceremony again this year, but there will be a proper Christmas festival on Sunday 4th December, where you can expect plenty of Christmas stalls, entertainment, street food, Children’s fun rides, an ice rink and reindeer.
And you never know, you might just be able to see some Christmas lights too!
