Wilberforce House Museum can now be explored digitally thanks to a new 3D virtual tour.

The 3D tour has been launched today (Monday 18 October) on Anti-Slavery Day 2021.

The virtual tour will allow people to explore the birthplace of William Wilberforce on their phone or digital device and discover the story of the transatlantic slave trade and its abolition.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “Hull has proud links to the abolition of the slave trade through the work and campaigning of William Wilberforce.

“I’m delighted that on Anti-Slavery Day 2021 we are able to launch this 3D virtual tour of the Wilberforce Museum, further highlighting the harrowing story of the transatlantic slave trade and how it was ultimately abolished through the work of many abolitionists and through resistance by enslaved people themselves.”

Wilberforce House is the birthplace of William Wilberforce, famous campaigner against the slave trade. The museum tells the story of the transatlantic slave trade and its abolition, as well as dealing with contemporary slavery. Galleries also offer a glimpse into West African culture.

The permanent displays at Wilberforce House include journals and items that belonged to William Wilberforce, including original costume. There are many significant items linked to slavery and the campaign and resistance that eventually led to its abolition.

The 3D virtual tour was made possible through funding from the DCMS cultural recovery fund. A grants programme issued by the UK government as a response to the COVID -19 pandemic.

The virtual tour is available here.

The 3D tour creates a lasting resource that can be accessed by anyone from anywhere, in particular supporting schools and young people to learn about this important history.
