Work is due to begin later this month on a new £900,000 scheme to convent a crossroads into a roundabout in Hessle.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council will start major roadworks on Monday 23 August to transform the junction at the A1105 Boothferry Road and First Lane in Hessle into a roundabout.

The scheme is due to take 17 weeks to complete.

The work is being carried out to improve road safety at the junction, and will involve reconfiguring the existing staggered crossroads.

Drivers are being informed that the roadworks will mean:

  • First Lane (north) is due to be fully closed at its junctions with Boothferry Road for 17 weeks from 23 August, 24 hours a day. Traffic will need to follow a diversion.
  • First Lane (south) is due to be fully closed, 24 hours a day, for six weeks from 23 August, 24 hours a day. Traffic will need to follow a diversion.
  • The central reserve gap will be closed for the duration of the works.
  • The A1105 Boothferry Road will also be closed provisionally on three Sundays; 28 November, 5 December and 12 December from 9am to 6pm for resurfacing works.

Councillor Gary McMaster, the council’s portfolio holder for planning, infrastructure and housing, said: “The work to be carried out to convert a staggered crossroads into a roundabout on this stretch of road in Hessle will greatly improve road safety at this site, which is why the council is investing in this scheme.”

Adam Holmes, head of infrastructure and facilities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We would like to thank drivers and residents in advance for their patience during these major roadworks, but they are necessary to make the site safe for our workers, for motorists and those living nearby.”

During the scheme, workers from Northern Gas Networks will be on site for three weeks from August 23, and workers from Northern Powergrid will be on site for three weeks from September 13.
