Armed Forces Day celebrated in Hull

Hull will turn red, white and blue next weekend as Armed Forces Day is celebrated in the city centre.

Queen Victoria Square will play host to this free event next Saturday (28 June) which promises to have something for the whole family. As part of the 80th anniversary year the city will join the major event in Cleethorpes in marking on the same day of commemorations.

Free family activities on offer include a Climbing wall, face painting and balloon modelling. Military attractions will also be on offer alongside a veterans’ marquee filled with representatives from Aden Vets, National Malay & Borneo, Blind Veterans UK, National Civilian WW2 Memorial Trust and HCC Armed Forces Covenant.  Hull History Centre will also be showing the 80th Anniversary film of VE Day taken in Hull.

For the first time at this event, a main stage will also be in Queen Victoria Square, with musical performances from The Band of 150 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps, Humberside and South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force Band, Venus and The BBB’s taking place throughout the day. The Lord Mayor of Kingston Upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Cllr Cheryl Payne will officially open the event.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: “Armed Forces Day offers a fantastic opportunity for residents to come out and celebrate the vital role our country’s armed forces play in protecting us, as well as providing a chance to reflect and thank them.

“This family-friendly event has so much on offer with something for everyone to enjoy.”

Hull’s Armed Forces Day event takes place in Queen Victoria Square on Saturday 28 June, 10am – 4pm. It is free to attend.
