This summer, we are finally able to get out and explore the museums and galleries that have been closed for so long.

For those who enjoy visual arts, or those who want to discover different kinds of art and artists, here are some of the best art and photography exhibitions around Hull this summer.

Enjoy Civic Life, Leo Fitzmaurice

Humber Street Gallery, 19 May – 2 September

This new work by the artist Leo Fitzmaurice is an exhibition of logos and signs that are redesigned in an exploration of how branding and images change alongside the world around us. Also on display is Fitzmaurice’s WayPoint sculpture in the Gallery Café, made up of Pay Point Company’s distinct yellow terminals. You are also able to see the artist live on the 4 August in Humber Street Gallery, as he will be a part of the Artist In-Conversation: Leo Fitzmaurice with Paul Carey-Kent event.

In My Room, Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings

Humber Street Gallery, 1 July – 12 September

In My Room is an artistic film by Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings which is their first institutional exhibition. It is an exploration of LGBT+ politics, history and aesthetics. The role of cities in forming identity is also important, as seen in the painting of a high street architecture populated by pedestrians.

Brick Wonders

Beverley Art Gallery, 3 July – 2 October

This exciting exhibition, curated by the artist Warren Elsmore, is a collection of some of the best LEGO creations. There are over forty different models to see, including the seven wonders of the ancient world as well as modern wonders like the Internet and natural wonders such as the Aurora Australis- all of them made from bricks! There’s also a stunning centrepiece of the Great Barrier Reef, which has all kinds of small details for you to enjoy.

Hull College Photography Exhibition Launch

Prospect Gallery, 21 July, 5 PM – 6 PM

These photography exhibits from a local college is also helping to support your local community. Teaming up with One Hull Of Forest and the Green Task Force, Hull College is launching a gallery commemorating students’ work throughout the summer that will help these charities to keep on their work for the environment. At this launch event, you will be given a free tree to be planted for you, or in honour of someone, in order to keep Hull green! The gallery will be open through summer on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 11.30 AM – 4 PM.

Ferens Art Gallery 2021 Open Exhibition

The Ferens, 24 July – 3 October

This exhibition is a yearly work that showcases work from amateur and professional artists alike. The Ferens has a huge collection of traditional art by European Old Masters, portraiture and marine painting but this modern, contemporary art will celebrate local talent and bring new artists to your attention.

Portable Sculpture

Henry Moore Foundation, Leeds – 18 May – 29 August

Henry Moore was one of the most significant British artists in the twentieth century and he founded the Henry Moore Foundation with his family to encourage public appreciate of the visual arts. This group exhibition has multiple events throughout the summer which explores sculptures that are deliberately designed to be portable – subverting the idea that sculptures are just hefty objects fixed into place. The exhibition collects work all the way from 1934 with artists such as Hannelore Baron, Louise Bourgeois, Barry Flanagan and new work made for this exhibition by James Ackerley and Claire Ashley.

Masterpieces in Miniatures: The 2021 Model Art Gallery

Pallant House Gallery, Chichester – 26 June – Spring 2022

Based off of a design by Wright & Wright architects in 2020, the model house by Pallant House Gallery is a miniature art gallery, including original pieces of miniature work by over thirty contemporary British artists. These miniature pieces of art were all created during the 2020 lockdown and are now finally able to be displayed. The 2021 model art gallery is displayed alongside two previous model galleries; the Model Gallery 2000 and The Thirty Four Gallery. Together, they show a progression of art from 1934.

The Photography Show

National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham – 18 – 21 September

This is a highlight show for artist and photographers- or those that would like to develop their artistic talent- as there will be lots of talks, demos and master classes available for you. As well as that, there will be exhibitions to display a wide range of photography. It is a very professional event at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
