A brand-new event celebrating one of Hull’s most beloved figures is launching this month. Bee Lady Day, created to honour the incredible legacy of Jean Bishop, will become an annual tradition from this year—taking place every 13th May, which would have been Jean’s birthday.
Jean, known across Hull as The Bee Lady, spent more than 30 years raising money for Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire, collecting nearly £125,000 dressed in her iconic bee costume. She became a local hero not only for her fundraising but for the warmth and joy she brought to everyone she met.
Now, Bee Lady Day aims to carry on that legacy, with a mission to raise a further £100,000 to support older people across the region who are facing challenges. Every penny raised will go directly to Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire, helping provide essential support to those in later life.
This new annual event has been created in collaboration with Jean’s family, and they’re proud to see her legacy continue in such a meaningful way.
From schools and nurseries to businesses and individuals, everyone is encouraged to get involved. That could mean dressing up in black and yellow, holding a bake sale, taking on a sponsored challenge, or simply making a donation—there are endless ways to take part and help make a difference.
A special interactive event map is now live and being updated regularly, showing what’s happening across the region on Bee Lady Day:

Landmarks across the city will light up in amber and yellow in tribute to Jean, while fundraising activities will be happening in workplaces, classrooms, and homes throughout Hull and East Yorkshire.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Andy Haynes, CEO of Age UK HEY, said:
“Jean was an inspiration to people of all ages. Bee Lady Day is a wonderful way to remember her, celebrate everything she stood for, and continue raising money for a cause she cared deeply about.”
Louise Mendham, Service Delivery Director at Hull Trains, added:
“We’re proud to be part of this fitting tribute to Jean. Her community spirit touched so many people, and we’re delighted to continue supporting the charity she gave so much of her life to.”
