A £150,000 improvement project is to be carried out at Beverley Bus Station starting from this week.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s major scheme is due to begin today (Monday 28 February) and is expected to take three weeks to complete.

The work will involve removing the existing uneven block paving and foundation layers and replacing them with a new layer of road surface, using a special, reinforced material designed to withstand intense traffic loadings and fuel leaks, while maintaining strength – making it an ideal material for this project.

Extra drainage will also be installed for surface water, and pedestrian guardrails and fencing, which have been damaged, will also be replaced.

Work will take place each day between 7.30am and 7.30pm.

While the scheme is being carried out, the bus station will be closed to passengers and buses.

During the closure, bus stops at the station will be moved to alternative locations nearby. Passengers and bus companies have been informed already.

Buses will stop at five alternative locations – two on Manor Road, two on New Walkergate, and one on Norwood – from Monday 28 February to Friday 18 March.

The improvement work on the bus station is to be carried out by council contractor Specialist Surfacing Ltd.

Councillor Chris Matthews, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and climate change, said: “While we understand this will cause disruption for passengers and bus services, this work is essential to improve the bus station and keep it operating as normal for years to come.

“Thank you to bus users and bus services for their patience while this work is carried out.

“It hasn’t been an easy task to relocate the bus stops and we appreciate everyone taking the temporary changes on board.”
