More than 45,600 Christmas lights are currently being installed across Hull city centre ready for the festive period.

Although there will be no large switch-on event this year due to covid restrictions on mass gatherings, Hull will still be ready to welcome Christmas shoppers with main streets and areas lit, as well as the traditional 45ft Norway Spruce as the centrepiece in Queen Victoria Square.

Taking around six weeks to complete, KWL teams are currently installing more than 228 separate columns, decorating Jameson Street, King Edward St and Saville Street trees, and installing a Whitefriargate and Silver Street lighting scheme.

Hull New Theatre Gardens, Queen Victoria Square and Hepworth Arcade will also have their own lighting schemes and, for the first time, lampposts on the marina will be decorated.

Councillor Dave Craker, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said:

“It is of course disappointing that we are unable to hold the annual switch-on event that attracts thousands each year, however Christmas is not cancelled and we are working hard to ensure the city centre still has the warm festive feel that shoppers are accustomed to.”

The lights will be on from the middle of November, signalling the start of late-night shopping, and will remain on until January. It is hoped the switch-on of the lights will be broadcast on the council’s social media channels.
