A contractor has been appointed to carry out the first phase of the project to refurbish Chapman Street Bridge.

Hull City Council has published a decision record confirming the awarding of the contract to Pell Frischmann, for the sum of £332,393, after an open tender process in which bids were assessed on a ‘best value’ basis, combining price and quality.

This phase of the project, which will incorporate outline design and consultation, will take approximately nine months.

The project will be funded from the existing Bridge Design and Refurbishment Works capital budget allocation.

The Grade II-listed Chapman Street bridge, also known as Sculcoates Bridge, opened in 1874 but has been closed to motorists since April 2020, after an inspection found that its condition had deteriorated to the point that it was no longer safe to carry motor vehicles.

Councillor Dean Kirk, portfolio holder for roads, highways and transport, said: “Since Chapman Street Bridge closed to traffic, work has been ongoing behind the scenes to consult with statutory authorities and put together a contract that will hopefully enable us to return the bridge to its former glory.

“As the oldest bridge on the river and a listed structure, it was essential that all options were considered so that we end up with a bridge that can be returned to the highway network.

“This refurbishment not only protects a historic bridge, it also helps us improve our road infrastructure and waterways.

Further information will be released as the project develops.
