NEW curry house on Newland serves amazing family recipes

A new curry house has just opened on Newland Avenue, and it’s well worth checking out. Curryish, at 191 Newland Avenue, is the only dedicated curry house on this popular street — and it’s already making a great impression with its authentic family recipes and warm, welcoming vibe.

The owners have transformed the former Noodle Plus unit with a full rebuild, bringing something fresh and homely to the area. The menu is built around homestyle Indian dishes, many of which are based on their own family recipes, giving each one a personal twist you won’t find anywhere else.

We went along to give it a try. We started with a couple of drinks — they serve a range of mocktails, and if you fancy something stronger, you can bring your own wine with no corkage charge. They’ll even serve it in an LED wine cooler on your table, which is a fun touch.

To start, we ordered the poppadom pickle tray, which came with five different pickles and chutneys — perfect for loading up on crisp poppadoms. Then came the mains, and this is where Curryish really shines. The Salmon Malaidar was creamy and packed with flavour, served with a fresh naan that tasted just as good as it looked. The Papri Chaat was another favourite — light, crunchy, and full of different textures. And the Nawabi Nalli Gosht, a slow-cooked lamb shank dish, was so tender it just fell off the bone.

We finished with two traditional Indian desserts — Gulab Jamun, warm and rich, and Rosh Malai, light, spongy, and creamy. The meal was rounded off with a small serving of mukhwas, a colourful after-dinner snack that aids digestion and leaves you with a refreshing taste.

It’s clear a lot of heart and soul goes into every dish here. The atmosphere is relaxed, the food is full of flavour, and it’s great to see an independent family-run spot like this opening on Newland Avenue. We’ll definitely be going back.

Curryish is open Monday to Sunday from 5pm to 11pm.
