Tucked away just off Alfred Gelder Street, Food For Cowboys is one of those places you feel lucky to stumble across. And while the Drypool Bridge works have the road closed, if you sneak down the side, you’ll still find this hidden taqueria open and serving up some seriously good food.
It’s the creation of Hull lad Tarik and his business partner, who both spent years training in kitchens across London and Leeds before deciding Hull needed a proper taqueria of its own. Tarik started out with pop-ups during lockdown, building a loyal following one dish at a time, and by August 2023 they’d opened their first spot on Bond Street. After a brilliant first year, they’ve now moved into a new restaurant next to the White Hart on Alfred Gelder Street.

The menu is all about bold flavours and inventive combinations. The birria is rich and indulgent, with slow-cooked beef folded into a crispy tortilla ready to dip into a silky consommé — messy, but absolutely worth it. The carnitas are another highlight, with tender pork lifted by sharp orange-pickled onions that cut through beautifully. The gambas tostada gets a hit of bone marrow richness that takes it to another level, while the corn dogs – chorizo in a cornbread batter with their own chipotle ketchup – are a fun, fiery twist. Even the sides are addictive, with maple and chipotle fried corn ribs you’ll keep going back for.
The drinks are crafted with the same care. Their classic Margarita is crisp and perfectly balanced, while the non-alcoholic Michelada packs all the depth and spice of the original without the alcohol.

Whether you’re after authentic Mexican flavours, creative twists on classics or just a cosy spot with food worth talking about, Food For Cowboys is one you’ll definitely want on your list. And if you fancy a drink with your meal, you can even order from their menu while sitting in the White Hart next door.
