Free event celebrating music in Hull invites anyone interested in music

Anyone interested in music in Hull is invited to a day of inspiration and discussion themed around collaboration. Featuring live performances of new compositions, discussions and presentations, ‘Out of the Box’ is free and open to everyone who loves music.

The event, organised by Hull City Council’s Arts Development team in partnership with J-Night, will bring together people from across the city in a two-part free event on Friday 17 November.

An afternoon ‘summit’ will take place at Social on Humber Street to shine a spotlight on inspiring activity in the city, share participants current offers and wants, as well as considering the value of collaboration and putting music centre stage.

An early evening networking event at Trinity Market will flow into a night of performances of ‘Out of the Box’ special collaborative commissions and news of future ‘Out of the Box’ commission opportunities for local artists with J-Night.

The evening will feature world-premiere performances of exciting new music which pairs artists with different musical backgrounds. Featuring:

  • Graziana Presice with Stewart Baxter
  • Josh Overton with Nigel Taylor
  • Stephanie Halsey with Nigel Taylor
  • Samatar Elmi with Richard Sleight and Freedom Chorus – film
  • Mambo Jambo with Joe Martin

This will be followed by a take-over by members of the Hull Youth Music Network.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure said: “‘Out of the Box’ is aimed at anyone interested in music in Hull – all of whom have a stake in the future of music in the city. From musicians to music educators, music organisations to youth organisations, promoters to music tech providers, listeners and potential audiences, everyone with a vested interest in the future of music in Hull is invited.

“We hope engaging a broad cross-section of people will encourage a collaborative fresh and creative approach to visioning the future shape and ambition of the music sector in the city.”

David Porter, Director, Hull Jazz Festival said: ” J-Night is proud to support the inspirational new music that is being created for ‘Out of the Box’ and we look forward to working with our partners to put Hull music at the heart of the city this November and into the future, as part of our festival.”
