Hull lass Lucy spent two decades mastering proper fish and chips before finally opening her own shop in 2024. She kept the classics she’s always loved, added a few twists she knew would work, and built The Funky Fish into a spot with a loyal crowd who come back again and again.
Everything here reflects the way she wants fish and chips to be made. The batter is mixed fresh every day, the tartare sauce is made in-house, and the pans are filtered three times a day so the oil stays clean. It’s simple, honest cooking, and it’s done with care.
When we visited, we went straight for the dish everyone seems to rave about: the fish pattie butty special. A soft breadcake, homemade tartare, mushy peas or curry or gravy, and a crisp fish and potato pattie in the middle. It’s something you try once and instantly understand why it’s become a favourite. The cheese and onion pattie is another great option, and the fish and chips hold their own too, with light batter, proper chips, and a choice of classic cod or Norwegian haddock sourced fresh from the Barents Sea.
There are large and small specials, pattie specials, and kids’ meals that come in their own little box with a drink, a lolly, and a puzzle to keep them entertained. It feels like a genuine Hull chippy, made warmer by the personal touches Lucy’s picked up from years of serving regulars.
So if you’re looking for a fresh, local, down-to-earth chippy in Hull, then give The Funky Fish a go!
