Investigation works scheduled for Hessle Road flyover

As part of Hull City Council’s five-year investment in the city’s infrastructure, investigation works will be carried out on Hessle Road flyover to help inform future strengthening works.

Following their appointment in May, Mason Clark Associates will begin detailed investigation works on the carriageway of Hessle Road flyover on behalf of the Hull City Council.

An initial survey is scheduled to commence today (Wednesday 2 July)between 9am and 3.30pm and will take place along the full length of the flyover.

The detailed investigations are then planned to start at 9am on Friday 18 July. The works are scheduled to be completed by 6am on Friday 12 September

These works will span the full length of the flyover and are crucial for determining the future maintenance and strengthening works to ensure the structure’s long-term resilience.

To ensure public safety and maintain traffic flow throughout both the preparatory and main phases of work, the following traffic management measures will be in place:

  • The carriageway will be narrowed for drivers in two phases, allowing two-way traffic to continue during the works
  • The cycle lane will be closed, and cyclists will need to dismount and walk their bikes over the flyover or cycle along alternative routes
  • The footpath will remain open for pedestrians throughout the works

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “These investigations are an important step in securing the long-term future of the Hessle Road flyover.

“The findings will guide a future strengthening programme, helping to keep this key route safe and reliable for years to come.

“We’re grateful to residents and road users for their patience while this work takes place — and we’ll do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Andy Thompson, director of bridges at Mason Clark Associates, said: “As a Hull-based company we’re proud to be leading these investigations on Hessle Road flyover.

“Our experienced engineers are ready to assess the flyover’s condition and provide the insights needed to guide any future maintenance and strengthening works.”
