Hull City Council is appealing for residents to donate unwanted children’s Christmas jumpers to help local families and keep textiles out of wheelie bins.
Over the past few years, the council has collected hundreds of Christmas jumpers and delivered them to schools in priority areas identified by the council’s Love Your Street project.
For many families, Christmas is an added financial pressure, and this jumper collection is designed to help ensure all children can take part in the festive celebrations.
This year, as the cost of living continues to skyrocket, the council is aiming for its biggest collection yet.
Councillor Julia Conner, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “This year, we hope we can collect more Christmas jumpers than ever before and redistribute them to children and families that need them most.
“This simple, heart-warming act of donation will allow children to join in with their friends at Christmas, as well as reminding us all to donate unwanted clothing to those in need all year round.”
Elizabeth Dillon, Hull City Council’s Policy and Partnerships Manager for Streetscene, added: “This is a great opportunity for people right across the city to have a look through their wardrobes, and their children’s wardrobes, and donate their unwanted Christmas jumpers.
“However, textile recycling isn’t just at Christmas, it is a year-round activity. There are lots of opportunities in Hull to recycle textiles, such as through the council’s textile points – which are located across the city – or utilising your local charity shops.”
All jumpers donated will be sorted and distributed just in time for Christmas Jumper Day on Thursday 7 December, when people up and down the country come together and donate £2 to “make the world better with a sweater”.
Jumpers can be donated at The Wilson Centre, The Orchard Centre, Bransholme Health Centre and any Beercocks estate agents in Hull and the East Riding. To find your closest Beercocks branch, visit www.beercocks.com.
