The best new places to eat that opened in Hull & East Yorkshire in 2023

Hull had a ton of new openings last year both in and around the city centre, and there are a few gems just outside of the city too that opened their doors in 2023!

In case you missed any of them, here’s our list of new openings in and around hull in 2023.

Wendy’s

Kingswood Retail Park, Gibraltar Rd, Hull HU7 3DB

You’ll definitely have heard about this one, but we’d be remiss not to include it. The world’s largest Wendy’s® opened in Hull on Thursday 14th December, taking over the former site of Papas Fish & Chips at Kingswood Retail Park!

Wendy’s menu in Hull features a variety of its signature items. Burger enthusiasts can look forward to the Baconator®, Dave’s Single™, and the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, alongside the beloved Frosty® dessert available in both chocolate and vanilla flavours. Unique to its UK outlets, Wendy’s also serves exclusive items like chicken fillet nuggets and the Curry Bean Burger, which maintains Wendy’s distinctive square-shaped design!

Crepes and Bubbles

33 Whitefriargate, Hull HU1 2EX

Crepes and Bubbles is a new spot in Hull’s Whitefriargate that opened last year. It’s where the old Thorntons used to be, and is a grab-and-go type of place, which is great for anyone looking for a quick bite or drink, especially if you’re in a rush in the morning or looking for a more decadent lunch!

The crepes are served in a cone shape just like in Japan, making them easy to eat on the go, and there are tons of different kinds, from their luxury options like Cookies & Cream and Double Trouble to tasty crepe staples like Cinnamon Sugar & Butter. The bubble tea is great too, with a vast selection of different fruit teas, milk teas, bubbles, tapioca and more, all ready to be mixed and matched into your perfect drink!

Sebu is a new penthouse restaurant perched on the 12th floor of the K2 building on 60 Bond Street! It’s a fantastic addition to the top end of Hull’s diverse food landscape, and in a prime position within walking distance of Hull’s big venues too, making it a perfect pre-show dining spot.

They serve Filipino-Hispanic-influenced small plates and hearty dishes, alongside a variety of steaks and BBQ meats. Reminiscent of the owners’ home in the Philippines, it brings Filipino food culture to Hull, complete with the warm welcome and the delicious flavours of their take on Filipino-Hispanic classics!

Nestled in Hull city centre, the newly opened Koffee Lab has quickly become a go-to spot for both early risers and brunch lovers, with its doors open from 7am to 4pm. They offer an all-day menu, making breakfast favourites available any time before closing. There are gluten-free options too!

True to the name, Koffee Lab’s speciality is their drink selection. Their coffee is ethically sourced, specialist coffee from Dark Woods – making them the only place in Hull & East Yorkshire to stock the premium brand. They also make creamy frappuccinos, flavoured ice teas and popular bubble teas.

Sparta

4-6 Silver St, Hull HU1 1HT

Yeah yeah, we know what you’re thinking: “Greek food in a OneStop?” but trust us, Sparta is a fully-fledged Greek eatery serving an array of Greek-inspired culinary delights including gyros wraps, chicken noodle boxes, and scrumptious halloumi fries.

Sparta also provides a gyros box, featuring the same ingredients as a standard gyros wrap but neatly presented for easier (and less messy) consumption. And their halloumi fries rank among the best we’ve encountered in Hull, so we can’t help but recommend giving them a try!

Everything Toastie

Everything Toastie is a newly opened cafe in Hull City Centre! You can find it on Carr Lane, just across from Primark. It’s got a comfy atmosphere accompanying great food, making it a perfect spot for any meal of the day!

The biggest highlight of the café is, of course, the imaginative menu. It’s filled with a variety of cleverly named toasties, ranging from classic staples to adventurous options. They offer delicious drinks and desserts too – check their socials for their latest offerings!

With gluten-free options available for all sandwiches and an ample selection of vegetarian dishes, it’s clear that inclusivity is a priority, and the delicious selection of toasties, sandwiches, and more alongside the cocktail bar make it a great place to stop no matter the time of day.

Stretch Pizza

5-6 Paragon St, Hull HU1 3PQ

Stretch Pizza is a restaurant that has quickly carved a name for itself. It’s owned by couple Jason and Natasha, who were inspired in 2017 after their first taste of real Neapolitan pizza in Leeds. After starting as a pop-up at events and festivals in 2020, the positive response from customers was so overwhelming that they established a permanent restaurant and takeaway in early 2023!

They offer a ton of pizzas with new options available all the time; when we went, we tried a classic Margherita, a spicy Diavola, a Capra with a unique combination of rocket, goat’s cheese, honey, and lemon zest, and a Nduja Fuso with a salsa and truffle base. Jason and the team come up with different flavours themselves; for example the Capra with goat’s cheese and honey we just mentioned, was put together by employee Max!
