Hull to host comic book festival featuring V for Vendetta illustrator David Lloyd

Marking the BBC’s 100 Novels that Shaped Our World, Hull Libraries will be celebrating the amazing impact of comic novels with a host of workshops, talks and story times next month.

Guests include V for Vendetta illustrator David Lloyd, American writer and illustrator Seaerra Miller, Hull-based artist Sean Azzopardi and children’s author and illustrator Bethan Woollvin.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “Hull Libraries has, once again, put together an incredible programme.

“David Lloyd is royalty in the comic book world, with his V for Vendetta illustrations having become iconic. I’m delighted that we are able to host such a fantastic event next month.”

The programme will run from Monday 2 August until Saturday 7 August.

The only event that does not require booking is the David Lloyd book signing on Saturday 7 August.

Tickets will be available from Wednesday 21 July.

Mason Mooney: Paranormal Investigator Story Time

Paranormal Investigator Mason Mooney is the creation of author Seaerra Miller.

Join Paranormal Investigator Mason Mooney as he tackles ghosts, witches and grumpy teenagers to prove once and for all who the real talent is in the world of paranormal creatures is. Everyone who attends will receive their very own copy of Mason Mooney to take home along with an exclusive drawing, just for Hull Libraries, by author and illustrator Seaerra Miller.

Seaerra Miller dials in all the way from the west coast of the USA to tell fans about her spooky, ghost-filled and hilarious adventure Mason Mooney: Paranormal Investigator.

Monday 2 August, Bransholme & Western Libraries, 2.30pm until 3.30pm; Wednesday 4 August, Gipsyville & Greenwood Avenue Libraries, 2.30pm until 3.30pm

Bethan Woollvin will be reading her new book, Three Little Vikings, and demonstrating how to draw amazing characters. Everyone who comes will receive their very own signed copy of Three Little Vikings to take home.

V for Vendetta Book Club

Monday 2 August, online (Zoom), 7pm until 8pm

If you’ve read the book or watched the film, this is a chance to discuss all things V for Vendetta from subversive politics to the iconic mask.

Making Marks @ Hull Makerspace

Wednesday 4 August, Makerspace, Hull Central Library, 4pm until 7pm

Explore and create symbols in a print-making workshop inspired by the iconic V from V for Vendetta. Digitally design a logo and try different mark-making processes including laser cutting, vinyl stickers and dye sublimation on ceramics using a variety of the high-tech equipment on offer in the Makerspace.

Friday 6 August, Hull Central Library and online (Zoom), 7pm

Illustrator of the iconic V for Vendetta, David Lloyd, will be live at Hull Central Library. V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd was first published as a comic strip in 1982. The story reflected the political climate of the time exploring themes of power, fascism, anarchy and freedom. 40 years later V for Vendetta still resonates, with the iconic V mask symbolising protest and rebellion around the world.

The ‘V mask’ has become an iconic image, not just in comics, but also in wider culture.

Saturday 7 August, Hull Central Library, 10am until 12pm

Drop in and meet David Lloyd who will be signing copies of V for Vendetta at Hull Central Library on Saturday 7th August from 10am – 12pm. David will also have volumes of his online comics art magazine, Aces Weekly, on sale via special smart coded access cards that all come with a free sketch as a bonus.

DIY Comic Creation

Saturday 7 August, Makerspace, Hull Central Library, 12pm until 3pm

Join Hull-based cartoonist Sean Azzopardi for a Zine making workshop at Makerspace Hull. Participants will be able to create and take away their own self-published Zine, and in the spirit of independent comics, copies of other participants work as well. With more than 20 years of comic making experience, Sean has produced a number of graphic novels, comics, zines and web-comics and has a wealth of ideas to pass along.
