Hull’s first independent delicatessen celebrates 40 years in business

One of Hull’s favourite delis is turning 40 this week. Located now on Carr Lane, Herby’s Delicatessen & Caterers, established in 1984 by Tony Burr on Newland Avenue, Hull, has reached a significant milestone under the leadership of his daughters Alison Denby and Michelle Hodgson.

From its beginning, Herby’s has been driven by a simple yet profound mission: to bring good quality continental style food to the hungry people of Hull.

Over the years, this mission has seen the deli evolve from a local secret to a beloved institution, known city-wide for its superb sandwiches, freshly made salads, home-cooked savouries, and a special focus on vegetarian options that cater to a diverse range of tastes.

Herby’s has navigated through several locations, including Ferensway and Princes Quay, before settling in its current location on Carr Lane. Each move was a step towards expansion and enhancement of their offerings, making Herby’s a staple in Hull’s food scene.

The deli’s success has been a family affair, with Tony’s daughters, Alison Denby and Michelle Hodgson, now leading the business as directors, ensuring the legacy continues with the same commitment to quality and community.

Celebrating four decades in business, Herby’s stands as a proud purveyor of fine foods, with a commitment to sourcing the best local ingredients to create their unique offerings.

Alison Denby shares, “We aim to provide the best locally sourced fresh food with our own unique flair. We are very proud to say we have been in business for 40 years.”

Herby’s has not only made a name for itself through its delicious deli selections but also through its well-established corporate and private catering service.

Whether it’s a business lunch, a family gathering, or a community event, Herby’s has been at the forefront, serving up delectable dishes that highlight the best of Hull’s local produce.

The success of Herby’s over the years can be attributed to its unwavering dedication to quality and the community it serves. As a family-run business, Herby’s embodies the spirit of Hull, showcasing the city’s rich culinary heritage and its capacity for innovation.

The deli’s diverse menu, which boasts everything from mouth-watering vegetarian fare to classic sandwiches stuffed with the finest fillings, reflects a deep understanding of its customers’ evolving tastes and preferences.

As Herby’s celebrates this significant milestone, it invites the community of Hull and beyond to join in the festivities. Reflecting on 40 years of culinary excellence, Herby’s looks forward to continuing its tradition of serving high-quality, delicious food to its loyal customers for many more years to come.

Congratulations to Herby’s on this significant milestone.
