Hull’s most loved independent and unique bookshops

There is no better escape than relaxing into a good book, and in Hull there are lots of fantastic book shops to help send you to all new worlds. Whilst it’s easy to order from big, established businesses, it’s often a more personal and unique experience buying books from an independent seller. Not only that, but you get to support a local, homegrown business. Here are our suggestions for where to buy books in Hull.

J E Books

12 Hepworth’s Arcade, Hull HU1 1JU

A friendly and independent bookshop, J.E. Books is located at 12 Hepworth’s Arcade. Not only does it have a huge variety of books in store but you can also contact them (either in person or online) to order new books or search for a specific second-hand book! All their contact deals are available on their website, where they also have a blog talking about books available that they have read.

The Beverley Bookshop

19 Butcher Row, Beverley HU17 0AA

This business is family owned and family run, named The Beverley Bookshop because it is in the heart of Beverley’s high street. There are thousands of discounted books stocked up in store, as well as a variety of jigsaws, cards and gifts. As well as that, you are also able to order books online, which will be delivered directly to you.

Amazing Fantasy

Also known as the comic book shop, Amazing Fantasy is a small retailer on Anlaby Road. It is Hull’s best selection of comics, graphic novels and manga, which also includes lots of independent titles as well as the more well-known and popular ones. You can have a look at their selection and buy online on their website.

Hessle Bookshop

They also have a book ordering service where you can order any book you’re looking for (so long as it’s still in print) and they’ll try and get it for you. Humber Books

Yew Tree House, 13, Holydyke, Barton-upon-Humber DN18 5PS

A bit different from the other shops on this list, Humber Books specialises in rare and antique theological books. They have a huge library of 17th century reformation texts and rare English Bibles, which they have diatributed to many leading worldwide universities and libraries. You can find out more on their website.

Oxfam Bookshop

10 Toll Gavel, Beverley HU17 9AJ

As well as having a more general charity shop in Newland Avenue, Oxfam also has a bookshop on Toll Gavel, Beverley. Oxfam is a really inspiring charity that seeks to end poverty and they have a diverse selection of good quality second-hand books that you will enjoy. On their online shop, they also have lots of rare and antique books that are really unique.

And other charity shops…

Getting new books is always great but second-hand books are cheaper, better for the planet and have a unique history. So, you can always go to charity shops, such as British Heart Foundation, Scope and Dove House Hospice in Hull to get some second-hand books whilst supporting these charities.
