Hull’s Prospect Centre to welcome new space-themed play area & educational hub

The iconic Prospect Shopping Centre is set to welcome Little Astronauts, a brand-new family entertainment centre, breathing new life into the food court that has been closed for the past five years.

Inspired by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Ben and Danielle Roman, Little Astronauts promises to redefine the local family entertainment experience with a touch of global inspiration.

As parents of two young boys, William (5) and Oliver (2), Ben and Danielle Roman have experienced first-hand the ups and downs of local soft play centres. Their global travels have given them a vision of what family entertainment should look like, and now they are bringing that vision home to Hull.

“After visiting various local soft play and family entertainment centres with our boys, we noticed a real lack of quality and consistency,” explains Ben Roman. “Many places we’ve been to don’t provide a fantastic experience for parents, with poor quality food and drink, uncomfortable seating, and play areas that are neither aesthetically pleasing or clean. We wanted a place where our kids could have fun and we could relax and enjoy the experience too. We saw an opportunity to change that with Little Astronauts.’’

Little Astronauts is set to be a game-changer for Hull families, offering not just a place for children to play, but a venue where parents can relax and enjoy quality time together. The centre will feature:

  • Immaculately Clean and Safe Out-Of-This-World Play: With an emphasis on space, the centre will feature futuristic play equipment as well as state of the art interactive play.
  • High-Quality Food and Beverage Options: Offering a variety of delicious, healthy, and family-friendly meals, snacks, and beverages, making it a great spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
  • A Unique and Inspiring Environment: Drawing on global influences to create a one-of-a-kind family entertainment centre in the heart of the city.
  • Inclusive Play for All Abilities: The centre will be thoughtfully designed to accommodate children with special educational needs (SEN), featuring sensory-friendly areas and adaptive play equipment, ensuring every child can enjoy a safe, engaging, and enriching experience.

Danielle Roman shares, “As parents of two young boys, Ben and I have often found ourselves struggling to find a nice place locally where we can enjoy a meal while our children play safely. We noticed a real gap in Hull City Centre for a family-friendly venue that combines good healthy food with a safe, clean, and fun play environment for the children. With Little Astronauts, we’re creating a space where families can come together, enjoy great food, and let their kids explore and play. We’re excited to offer something special to the families of Hull.”

Hull City Council has granted £158,044.50 to Roman Adventures Limited, trading as Little Astronauts, for a facility on the top storey of the shopping centre.

The funding has come from the council’s government-backed Levelling Up Fund and will transform the neglected area into a space-themed play and educational hub which will be supported by a food and beverage offering.

Almost 700 sqm of unused floor space will be brought back into use, whilst 13.5 full-time equivalent jobs will be created.

The award is being match-funded by Roman Adventures Limited, meaning more than £150,000 of private capital will also be invested into the city centre.

Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, the council’s portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “This is an exciting project, one that will no doubt provide endless fun for families in Hull.

“There is nothing like this in the area, so for the council to be able to support bringing to the city centre is fantastic and is another great example of the potential which LUF helps to unlock.”

The reopening of the food court at Prospect Shopping Centre marks a significant revitalisation for the area, providing a much-needed venue for families to gather and enjoy quality time together. Little Astronauts is expected to become a central hub for family entertainment in Hull, reflecting the Romans’ commitment to excellence and community spirit.
