Families and visitors to Sculcoates Park will be able to enjoy new facilities during the festive holidays as the first phase of improvement works are completed.
New footways and lighting to increase accessibility and safety for the community and park users have been installed, as well as the introduction of natural play equipment and fencing around the children’s play area.
These are in addition to green space enhancements along Beverley Road as part of Hull City Council’s Stepney High Street Accelerator (HSA) Pilot Programme.
Cllr Ted Dolman, portfolio holder for communities and community safety at the council, said: “The council is delighted that the first phase of improvement works for Sculcoates Park have been completed in time for the Christmas holidays.
“This popular park will provide a free and safer outdoor space for families and children during the holidays and I am sure they will enjoy the upgraded facilities.”
Sculcoates Park will remain open in early 2026 when isolated installations of additional benches, picnic tables and a chess table are finalised by contractor PBS Construction Ltd.
The popular sports area and ‘Red Top’ basketball court, complete with new hoops, will also be refurbished.
The works are supported by the HSA Partnership, a collaborative scheme between the council and local businesses, commercial property owners, community groups and other key stakeholders in the Stepney area.
The government-funded scheme provided almost £750,000 to reinvigorate the high street and improve the vibrancy and visual appeal of the Stepney area and its surrounding green spaces.
‘Love Stepney’ and a dedicated street care operative, funded by the HSA Partnership, will also continue to support the area through regular cleansing, low level plant care and engagement with businesses and residents in the community.
The council’s Love Your Neighbourhood programme is also supporting the legacy of the project to encourage community care as guardians for the high street planters.
Cllr Dolman added: “To see the Stepney community come together and feel a real sense of pride for their area is heartwarming to see and exactly what the scheme is designed to do.
“Additional improvements will continue at Sculcoates Park and the wider area in the new year and we thank the community for their patience.”
