Local secondary schools in Hull to receive second round of maritime grants

A second round of the Young Maritime Creatives scheme for local secondary schools is open for applications.

In partnership between Hull Maritime and Humber Field Archaeology, secondary schools in Hull have the chance to apply for a grant of up to £4,000 to create their own artistic response to Hull’s ancient monument, the South Blockhouse. These responses will be based on one of two themes “Hull 1540s to 1860s” or “Defending Hull”.

Six secondary schools will be selected, and the grant will support their student’s work in any creative field including art, drama, creative writing, digital media, dance or music.

The successful schools will develop their creative work during the 2024/25 academic year and selections of the students’ work will then go on display in at an exhibition celebrating the South Blockhouse in 2025.

Gillian Osgerby, Hull City Council’s Programme Director for Hull Maritime, said: “This is a great opportunity for local secondary schools to play an active role in celebrating the South Blockhouse site and its importance to the city.

“It also provides young people the chance to learn about this untold part of Hull’s maritime story.”

As part of the project Humber Field Archaeology are also offering schools the opportunity to have a real archaeological pit dug at their school and access to resources and expertise on the history of Hull and the South Blockhouse.

Applications can now be submitted and schools have until Friday 28 June to apply.
