There’s a proper little gem tucked away at the bottom of Newland Ave, and it’s serving some of the best beers in Britain right now – along with top-notch Sunday food that’s quickly building a loyal following.
Mr Moody’s Tavern is a cosy and characterful bar with an offbeat charm and relaxed, no-fuss vibe. Taken over last year by owner Dav, it was set up with one simple mission – to give people in Hull a laid-back space to enjoy high-quality, well-kept beer without all the frills.
And he’s doing exactly that. There’s no cocktails here – just brilliant Belgian Pilsners, punchy IPAs, fruity sours, and proper pints like Deya’s Steady Rolling Man (2024’s best beer in Britain) and the newly crowned 2025 winner London Black. It’s a lineup that serious beer lovers will appreciate – and casual drinkers can easily get behind too.

Now with a kitchen on site, Dav’s started bringing in local chefs to run special cuisine nights – and we were lucky enough to try their new Sunday roast, cooked by his good pal Russ. Between the beef, lamb, pork and all the trimmings, every plate was full of flavour and proper comforting. It’s cash only for food, so bring some with you – and while the bar takes card, they prefer cash too if you can swing it.
It’s walk-ins only here, and that suits the place perfectly – no pressure, just a good pint and a great atmosphere.

You’ll find Mr Moody’s Tavern at 6 Newland Avenue, Hull HU5 3AF, just near the corner of Queens Road.
