Five must-try independent spots that opened in Hull in 2025

Here are five independent spots that opened in Hull in 2025 that you absolutely have to try, whether you’re after proper comfort food, something a bit different, or just a really good place to eat with friends.

First up is B-Side, tucked just off Newland Avenue in the old Zoo Café spot. After opening earlier this year serving sarnies and slices, they’ve confirmed they’re switching to pizza only in the new year. The focus is on house-made dough, crisp edges and toppings that feel well thought out, with solid classics alongside more interesting options like the White Lie, the Funky Fungi and the Vegan Flow. It’s already a favourite locally, and the move to pizza-only feels like a confident next step.

You can find B-Side at 80B Newland Ave, Hull HU5 3AB, and opening times and more can be found on their Facebook and Instagram pages!

In the city centre, Homemade by Jo is a cosy, family-run café that does comfort food really well. The space is bright and welcoming, and the menu is packed with choice, from cold sandwiches and toasties to paninis, jacket potatoes and omelettes. The pesto, chicken and cheese panini is a standout, and the breakfasts are proper and filling. They also have pastries and cakes on the counter if you fancy something sweet.

You can find Homemade by Jo at 13 Story St, Hull HU1 3SA, and opening times and more can be found on their Facebook and Instagram pages!

Over on Beverley Road, KBBQ has brought Korean barbecue to Hull in a big way. The grills are built into your table, so you cook your own meat as you eat, making it a really social experience. It’s an all-you-can-eat setup with loads of choice, including marinated meats and Korean sides, and it works especially well for groups who want something a bit more interactive.

You can find KBBQ at 4, 439 Beverley Rd, Hull HU5 1NR, and opening times and more can be found on their website and Instagram page!

After reopening in 2025 with a brand-new look, Sweet Little Things Tea Room is well worth a visit. Afternoon tea is a big draw, with scones, sandwiches, bruschetta and sweet treats like cakes and macarons all done beautifully. If that’s not your thing, their ploughman’s boards and charcuterie boards are just as tempting.

You can find Sweet Little Things Tea Room at 200 Newland Ave, Hull HU5 2ND, and opening times and more can be found on their website, and Facebook & Instagram pages!

Finally, one of our all-time favourites, Archie’s Detroit Pizza, which you’ll find inside The Mission on Posterngate. Detroit-style pizza is all about thick, airy dough with cheese baked right into the edges, and they absolutely nail it. It’s rich, filling and a bit different, and the pub setting makes it easy to settle in for the evening. The Mission also offers plenty of other options if not everyone in your group is into thick bases.

You can find Archie’s Detroit Pizza at The Mission, 11-13 Posterngate, Hull HU1 2JN, and opening times and more can be found on their Facebook and Instagram pages!
