People are being encouraged to snap up free bikes as part of a scheme by R-evolution.

As part of the offer, people who work in Hull city centre will be loaned a free bike and helmet for a year.

The scheme kicks off on Wednesday 17 November, with just 30 bikes up for grabs.

John Marshall, CEO of Cottingham-based charity R-evolution, said: “As part of our plans to encourage active travel, we are launching a bike library aimed at people who travel into Hull city centre for work.

“By taking up this opportunity, you’ll have the chance to utilise the new cycle lanes, beat traffic, improve your fitness and reduce carbon emissions by choosing to bike to work.

“We understand not everyone gets the opportunity to own a bicycle, and that’s where we come in.”

R-evolution is a bike charity based in Cottingham that aims to give everyone the opportunity to cycle. The team opened a cycle hub in Trinity Market in March earlier this year.

The facility holds storage for up to 40 cycles and offers a repair service to commuters, shoppers and visitors.

John said: “Our charity’s main aims are to bring unused cycles back to life. We receive bikes that are no longer in use and have our professional mechanics fix and service them whilst teaching our trainees who are looking for a new career in light engineering. The new, refurbished bicycles are then redistributed into the community through bike libraries to help children get to school, asylum seekers gain independence, commuters get to work and much more.

“We believe that the whole community benefits when everybody and everything is cared for and has a purpose.

“If you would like to loan a bike, pop down to our unit and see what we have. We have 30 bikes funded to be loaned out which will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.”
