In the summer of 2025, Hull and East Yorkshire will come alive with a vibrant and unique public art event – A Mischief of Rats! This initiative will see 50 giant rat sculptures, each decorated by talented artists, installed across the region. The trail will run from May to the end of August 2025, culminating in a Grand Charity Auction aimed at raising significant funds for The Daisy Appeal, which supports advanced research and equipment for cancer, heart disease, and dementia.
A Mischief of Rats draws inspiration from Mick Ronson, the legendary guitarist from David Bowie’s Spiders from Mars, who began his career with Hull’s own band, The Rats. The event aims to create a “Pied Piper” effect, attracting locals and tourists alike to explore the colourful sculptures spread across towns, villages, resorts, and attractions. Each rat, standing nearly 6 feet tall, will be a unique piece of art, designed to bring joy and vibrancy to its surroundings.

The primary goal of A Mischief of Rats is to support The Daisy Appeal, a charity dedicated to improving the life chances of patients through cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art medical equipment. The Grand Charity Auction and merchandise sales are expected to raise up to £250,000 for the cause.
Engaging with outdoor art trails has proven benefits for physical and mental health. The whimsical and creative sculptures are designed to bring smiles and encourage outdoor activity, fostering a sense of well-being in the community.
The project offers extensive opportunities for community involvement. Local groups, schools, and parent-teacher associations can participate in designing and decorating some of the sculptures. Additionally, a “Mischief of Mini Rats” initiative will involve up to 60 schools and community groups, adding even more local flair to the event.
By attracting visitors to lesser-known areas and popular sites alike, A Mischief of Rats is set to boost local economies. Increased footfall will benefit shopping centres, markets, hospitality venues, and tourist attractions, showcasing the rich culture and sights of East Yorkshire and Hull.
Artists will be invited to explore themes such as:
- Health and medical science
- Rats in literature, TV, films, and cinema
- Rats, ships, and the sea
- Creative and imaginative rat makeovers
