Reviewing Hull’s famous national award-winning burger joint

We recently had the chance to visit Hull’s famous Dope Burger, a local favourite that’s been serving up American-style burgers for over a decade now! Dope Burger was originally established in 2011 by Oliver Johnson as a small kiosk opposite Paragon Station with a focus on quality local ingredients, and the business has grown substantially over the last decade. Everyone in Hull was asking if you’d tried the burgers from that little kiosk back then, and for good reason.

Further adding to the business’ success, in 2022 Dope Burger duo Danny and Ollie bagged the title of Britain’s Best Burger Takeaway on BBC show Britain’s Top Takeaways. The accolade is displayed proudly in the windows.

With Dope Burger outlets across Hull, Doncaster and Leeds, Dope has also expanded to include multiple brands under the Dope Eats label, such as Dope Dough, Boss Burritos, and more. We headed to Dope Burger’s largest branch in Witham for a taste of the burgers that had Hull raving all those years ago.

Upon arriving, we were greeted with an awesomely decorated store that immediately established a cool, casual and comfy vibe for the meal ahead. Although primarily a takeaway to the public eye, there’s plenty of seating to accommodate eating in, and the great music and awesome wall art make it a great place to chill and enjoy the food.

After settling in we were treated to a spread that certainly lived up to the hype. Six staggering burgers, three varieties of loaded fries, a massive dope cheese hot dog glazed with maple syrup, and some sweet treats too – 2 brownies, 2 blondies, and 3 of their frozen custard milkshakes.

We dug straight into the rainbow bagel burgers, which were exceptional – as delicious and flavourful as they are stylish. The sweet kick from the maple syrup was like nothing else we’d tasted. The huge Dope hot dog was wrapped in crispy cheese, and the secret sauce and sweet kick of the brioche and maple added a ton of flavour that left me craving another bite straight after swallowing the last. It’s criminally moreish.

The pulled pork burger and the brisket burgers were amazing too – the crisp texture of the gem lettuce and pickles meshing perfectly with the copious amounts of meat in the burgers.

We could barely stomach anything else after all that, but we always have room for desert. The brownies were perfectly baked, with a generous coating of butterscotch sauce enhancing the flavour of the gooey, chewy treat, and the blondies – a white chocolate version of the brownie, clever – were great too. The frozen custard milkshakes were a pleasant accompaniment to the whole meal, a satisfying conclusion to some of the best fast food we’d ever tasted.

Our visit to Dope Burger was an awesome experience, and it’s easy to see why this spot has become a local staple in Hull – we can’t wait to go back!
