There’s already loads to love about the Streetlife Museum – from its cobbled high street to the collection of old trams, carriages, and vintage cars – but if you’ve never done one of their free guided tours, you’re seriously missing out.
Led by a brilliant local volunteer, the tour lasts around an hour and gives you a proper behind-the-scenes insight into the exhibits. It’s not just about what you see, but the people and stories behind it all – like how one of the earliest bikes earned the nickname ‘the boneshaker’, or who Thomas Sheppard was and why he’s such an important figure in Hull’s museum history.
We came away knowing so much more about how Hull’s transport has changed over the last 200 years, and it made the whole visit even more engaging. You don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy it – it’s told in a really down-to-earth way and is open to all ages.
Tours usually run a couple of times a week, and while you might be lucky to grab a spot on the day, it’s definitely worth booking in advance to make sure you don’t miss out.
You can find the Streetlife Museum at High St, Hull HU1 1PS.
