Pumpkin picking, but make it magical. Scalby Grange Pick Your Own, just outside Gilberdyke, is back for its 13th year of pumpkins – and this time, the fields are glowing after dark.
Their popular twilight pumpkin picking sessions run every Thursday and Friday until 8pm throughout October, adding a whole new twist to a classic autumn day out.
This family-run farm has been part of East Yorkshire life since 1958, when it began as a tiny tin hut selling home-grown strawberries. More than 60 years later, it’s still run by the same family – Josh, his dad Pat, and a small team of relatives and friends – and has become one of the region’s best-loved seasonal traditions. What started with fruit picking now includes summer strawberries, autumn pumpkins, and even Christmas trees from mid-November to December.

This year’s pumpkin season runs from 1 to 31 October, open Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm, and Thursday and Friday from 10am to 8pm for twilight picking. There’s no booking required, no entry fee, free parking, and pumpkins are priced by weight (from just 50p to £17), which the team believes is a fairer way to charge. Dogs are welcome, and it’s easy to find too, with direct access from main roads.

There’s loads more than just pumpkins here. Every weekend, visitors can meet friendly animals from alpacas and goats to snakes and spiders, thanks to Ings Park Alpacas, Purple Pig Company and All Creatures Animal Encounters. There’s also, golden pumpkin prizes, photo ops everywhere you look, and special twilight appearances from Wednesday Addams and the Sanderson Sisters, brought to life by Mollie’s Party Paradise.

When it’s time for a break, head into the beautifully decorated Cruck Tent for homemade food and drinks – from warming pumpkin soup and fruit scones to deluxe milkshakes and hot chocolate. There’s plenty of indoor seating too, perfect for escaping the autumn chill.
With free entry, a relaxed atmosphere, and plenty to see, do and eat, Scalby Grange is the ideal way to celebrate spooky season – whether you visit by day or under the glow of the evening lights.
