Whitefriargate hosting huge free Easter fun day

Families are in for a fantastic day of free Easter fun in Hull city centre this weekend as the High Street Heritage Action Zone holds the Whitefriargate Easter event.

This Saturday (30 March), there will be a whole host of free activities for families to enjoy, including an Easter Bunny trail, storytelling sessions, face painting and crafting sessions for children.

Circus workshops and fire performances will also be on offer, with stilt walkers, jugglers and balloon modellers all providing plenty of entertainment.

All activities will take place down the length of Whitefriargate, including Beverley Gate and into Queen Victoria Square.

The event is also the final of the Whitefriargate High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) initiative; a partnership comprising Hull City Council, Historic England, and local property owners. The £2.2million investment since 2020 has seen the restoration of landmark buildings, creation of new residential units above shops, and improvements to the public realm, with the aim to make Whitefriargate a more vibrant part of the Old Town.

Other High Street Heritage Action Zone projects have included cultural events such as art installations in Hepworth’s Arcade, supporting the Kraken sea monsters in 2021 and 2023’s Awakening II project, as well as the Festivals of Archaeology and winter street activities.

Garry Taylor, Assistant Director for Major Projects, Culture and Place said:

“The High Street Heritage Action Zone has given Whitefriargate a new lease of life, allowing new businesses to move in and thrive, hosting events to drive footfall to the area, as well as supporting the kick-start of larger projects, like we are seeing with the Burton building and Wykeland.

“This weekend’s final celebration aims to offer families a great day out, whilst continuing to promote the special historical qualities of the Whitefriargate as a place to shop and visit.”

The event will also offer a chance to view the new display boards on the Neptune Inn (former Boots store) on Whitefriargate, offering historical information and online links to find out more about this part of the city.

This weekend’s Easter event takes place 10am – 3pm and is free to attend.
